The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 27. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Sunday, November 2nd, 2025, at 1:51 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Talcahuano (pop. 253,000) located 82 km from the epicenter, Arauco (pop. 24,700) 83 km away, Coronel (pop. 92,900) 85 km away, Lota (pop. 49,800) 86 km away, Concepcion (pop. 223,600) 88 km away, Chiguayante (pop. 82,500) 91 km away, Penco (pop. 46,100) 92 km away, Tome (pop. 46,700) 97 km away, and Curanilahue (pop. 30,600) 101 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)II: Very weak shaking188–88 km (54–54 mi)88 km (54 mi)III: Weak shaking881–100 km (50–62 mi)89 km (55 mi)IV: Light shaking683–111 km (51–69 mi)93 km (58 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (15 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 2 km2 (1 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 2 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Nov 2, 2025 01:51 pm (GMT -5)18 minutes ago - felt4.327 km0 km - This quakeChile: 83 km Al NO De AraucoMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 25 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 89 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.13 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 7.7 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 4.9 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 15.7 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 59 quakes per year (or 4.9 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 92 quakes per year (or 7.7 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
