Maharashtra: Amid infighting, ruling alliance plans to coordinate for polls

Leaders of all three parties will be meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) to discuss the alliance’s strategy for the upcoming local body polls,” said Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state unit chief and Raigad MP Sunil Tatkare. He was speaking during the launch of the party’s poll preparations, where the Marathwada district review was conducted on Monday.The meeting will be attended by Tatkare and Minister Hasan Mushrif from the NCP; BJP state president Ravindra Chavan and Chandrashekhar Bawankule from the BJP; and ministers Shambhuraj Desai and Uday Samant from the Shiv Sena.“We will be discussing the ongoing issue of statements made by different leaders within the alliance (against each other). We will come to a certain conclusion and, if needed, we will connect with the CM and deputy CMs,” Tatkare said.Tatkare added that the decision is to contest the elections as Mahayuti. “But the political situation is different as per every constituency. We did contest Lok Sabha and Assembly polls together. But we have fought against each other at local body polls even when in alliances,” he said, adding that the coordination committee meeting will also take a call on this.The ruling alliance has witnessed increasing disagreement at the district level, with several leaders publicly urging their parties to contest local body polls independently. The coordination committee is expected to take a final call on whether the alliance partners will jointly contest at the local level or go solo.Story continues below this adMeanwhile, speaking to reporters at a Diwali function about the alliance’s approach to local polls, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis had said that the Mahayuti will contest the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections together. “But in other places, we will take decisions according to the local situation,” he said, hinting at ongoing tensions. “If we fight as a grand alliance, seats of the opposition may increase.
