The Cleveland Browns are set on a move to the suburbs of Brook Park, and Mayor Edward Orcutt wants to keep things moving along. It’s been 18 months since the NFL franchise first announced plans to move out of their current home, Huntington Bank Field, which stands on the shores of Lake Erie. The Browns have big plans to move to a new $2.6bn Brook Park stadiumCLEVELAND BROWNSA state-of-the-art, $2.6 billion domed stadium has been proposed, and is set to be built around 16 miles south of downtown Cleveland. The Browns hope to have a new home in time for the 2029 season, and excavation work at the site has already started. An official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for April 30, and ahead of that milestone, Mayor Orcutt has called for the local council to move quickly in authorizing a ‘pre-development agreement’ with the Browns.Brook Park mayor aims to speed up Browns stadium agreementAccording to cleveland.com, such a move would ‘set the stage’ for a yet-to-be created public community authority to eventually own the team’s new stadium, and lease it back to the team.Legislation headed to Brook Park City Council for an initial discussion on Tuesday shows what the city stands to give — and get — under the agreement. One of the benefits of public ownership is that it would allow the waiving of sales taxes for construction materials, which is expected to be worth millions.“Every dollar matters on this project to make it a reality,” Mayor Orcutt said of the ordinance Monday.Under an outline of the deal, the city would also receive $24.8 million from a Browns’ affiliate — known as StadCo — to cover startup expenses incurred by the city.An initial $800,000 would be paid when the city signs the agreement, then $250,000 a month for 12 months starting in May 2026, $500,000 a month for two years starting in May 2027, and $750,000 a month starting in May 2029.Haslam Sports Group (HSG) has long touted a plan for a community authority, overseen by representatives of both the city and the team, to own the new building, according to cleveland.com.The Browns hope to hold a ceremonial groundbreaking for their new home this monthCLEVELAND BROWNSThe team hopes their stadium will be open for the 2029 NFL seasonCLEVELAND BROWNSSuch an arrangement would be similar to the one that HSG’s Columbus Crew soccer team has with its stadium in central Ohio.Mayor Orcutt is asking council to pass the ordinance on an ’emergency basis’ to speed up the process. That move could see it pass the same night it is formally introduced to council, rather than going through multiple meetings. One local councilman, Thomas Dufour, said he anticipates ‘a vibrant discussion on the subject’ of the new Browns stadium.“This project isn’t about the next five years, but the next 50 years,” he said.“I think there’s a lot to discuss here. In the end this project has to work for working people.”The Browns are moving away from Huntington Bank Field and downtown ClevelandGettyHSG recently outlined an updated funding model for the $2.6bn stadium, and will front around 67.5 percent of the total cost.Browns have no Plan B for new stadium despite challenge to fundingThe rest will come from public money, which includes $600 million in unclaimed funds committed by the state of Ohio. That money is currently held up in court, but Browns owner Dee Haslam recently expressed confidence that things will fall into place.“We’re building a stadium. So we’re full steam ahead, but we’re pretty confident,” she said, when asked during NFL owners’ meetings if the team had a backup plan.NFL Stadium StatusChicago Bears – NFL’s second-oldest franchise ready to abandon state as $5bn stadium project delayed againKansas City Chiefs – Chiefs owner issues response as Kansas City’s $4bn cross-state relocation plan hits roadblockJacksonville Jaguars – $5.6bn NFL team to relocate 150 miles away to 90-year-old stadium as decision madeCleveland Browns – NFL team stung by new $2.6bn stadium as owners release statementTennessee Titans – Inside $2.2bn NFL stadium revealed as new ‘stolen’ uniforms and logo slammed after leak“I mean, they (Ohio officials) have done it in the past for economic development and this definitely fits into that criteria.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
