Leader of Opposition Alex Borg said during a political rally on last Sunday that the Nationalist Party is ready to win the next general election, whether it will be announced next week or in a year’s time. Rumours have been surrounding the date of the next election from last September, ever since Borg was elected as the Leader of the PN, chalked up as a political advantage for the PL. Many believe that the Prime Minister will announce the date of the next general election in the coming weeks. The current legislation wraps up at March 2027. If the Prime Minister does not call a snap election, it would mark the first time that a Labour government in Malta has served a full legislation since 1981. During his appearance in Mdina, Borg criticised the “uncertainty” the Prime Minister has created by the rumours of an early election, where he alleged that it is having a negative impact on society. He continued to say that the election date should not be used for political gain and questioned the real reason behind the mystery surrounding the early election.Nevertheless, Robert Abela had mentioned the idea of an early election back in June 2025 when Former PN Leader Bernard Grech had stepped down. When questioned by local media about the occurrence of a snap election, Abela said that he will only consider it if national interest calls for it.The rumours of the early election were recently rekindled again due to the Labour Congress in Gozo and the sightings of political billboards reminiscent of election campaigning. Do you think an early election is in the books?•
