After being named Sportsman of the Year, Fabio Spiteri is setting his sights on an even bigger challenge, taking on the Double Deca, one of the most extreme ultra-endurance races in the world.Starting on 1st May, the race will see him complete 76km of swimming, 3,600km of cycling and 844km of running, distances that together push the limits of human endurance. The swim alone is equivalent to going around Malta, while the cycling and running distances mirror multiple loops around Sicily.Only 32 people worldwide have ever completed a Double Deca, and this year just nine athletes will be at the starting line with Fabio being one of them. The challenge is expected to take around 21 days to complete, with Spiteri sleeping only four hours per day. Supporting him throughout will be Philip Cachia, who will handle recovery and massage, and Philip Cauchi, who will oversee nutrition and provide ongoing support.Beyond representing Malta on an international stage, Spiteri is also using the race to raise funds for animal shelters. Last year, he raised a record €110,500, and this year he is aiming to surpass that amount, with all proceeds going towards shelters across Malta and Gozo.Members of the public can contribute through Revolut on +356 99816248, via PayPal on rarmalta@gmail.com or through the official PayPal link.
