‘That’s not going to play too well’: Trump admits he almost renamed the Gulf of America after himself, then claimed he was kidding

Wait 5 sec.

President Donald Trump recently revealed that he thought about renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of Trump,” but decided against it because it would not go over well with people. He made this comment during an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures. After making the remark with apparent seriousness, he quickly told the interviewer that he was only joking. In his words, the US has 93% of the shoreline. However, data from the US Geological Survey shows that the United States actually controls about 46% of the Gulf’s shoreline. Either way, Trump had already signed an executive order on his first day back in office to officially rename the body of water the Gulf of America, and his administration even criticized the Associated Press for not using the new name, reports the New York Post. This is not the first time Trump has put his name on something during his second term. He has been renaming government buildings, monuments, and institutions, continuing the same branding practice he used in his business career with things like Trump Towers, Trump steaks, and Trump vodka. That tradition has now moved into the public sector in a big way. Trump’s name is being placed on buildings, airports, roads, currency, and more across the country The United States Institute of Peace was renamed the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace in December 2025, with his name now displayed on the building in silver lettering. Also in December 2025, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was rebranded as the Trump-Kennedy Center. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the change, saying it was done “because of the work the president performed to save the building.” In Florida, a 4-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard was renamed President Donald J. Trump Boulevard in December 2025 to honor his nearby Mar-a-Lago golf club. Governor Ron DeSantis also signed legislation recently to rename Palm Beach International Airport after Trump. Separately, Trump has also been making headlines for his reported end-of-term pardon plans. Trump’s reach now extends to American currency as well. The US Treasury announced on March 26 that his signature will appear on all future paper currency, starting with the $100 bill, making him the first sitting president in history to be featured on a bank note. According to The Mirror, a commemorative gold coin with his image is also set for release this year to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. He has also launched a prescription drug program called TrumpRx to help Americans buy medications at lower prices. While naming landmarks after leaders has happened throughout history, the scale of what is happening now is something new. Trump appears to see these renaming as a way to leave a lasting mark on the country. His interest in naming things after himself goes beyond US borders too. He previously considered renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself or calling it the Strait of America. He also recently announced a blockade of that waterway after Iran tried to charge tolls for ships passing through. Meanwhile, Trump has also been dealing with personal controversies closer to home, including how he responded to Melania’s Epstein statement. He claimed on social media that the United States has more oil than the next two largest oil economies combined and that it is of better quality, as he promotes American petroleum exports to countries affected by the instability in that region.
