Robert Abela has launched the Labour Party’s pre-election congress in Gozo, describing it as a signal of the island’s importance under a Labour government.Speaking at the opening of the Malta Aqwa congress, Abela told delegates in Gozo that the party offers “peace of mind” and stability, while stressing that holding the event on the island reflects its priority in government policy. The event comes amid growing speculation about a possible early general election, although Abela dismissed suggestions that the congress automatically signals an imminent vote.In his address, the Prime Minister said Gozo’s economy has expanded significantly since 2013, claiming it now generates around €1 billion annually, with unemployment reduced to record lows. He added that only around 90 people are currently registered as unemployed on the island.Abela also outlined ongoing and planned projects for Gozo, including advanced proposals for a new airstrip, the development of a fast ferry route linking Sliema, Bugibba and Gozo, and new initiatives such as a student study hub and the installation of 150 bicycle racks in partnership with NGO Rota.He emphasised that while Gozo’s development continues, it must be carried out sustainably, preserving the island’s character as a network of villages. What do you think?•
