John Eustace on Patrick Agyemang’s injury: “It’s a huge blow for us”

Patrick Agyemang will not play a part in the remainder of Derby County’s season, the FIFA World Cup, and now the rest of 2026. Derby County manager John Eustace confirmed that Agyemang’s new Achillies’ injury will sideline him nine months. Agyemang suffered the injury in Monday’s 2-0 EFL Championship win over Stoke City, being stretchered off in the first half at Pride Park. The American forward delivered a positive first season abroad, scoring 10 goals in 38 appearances for the Rams. However, his new injury will end his club campaign, and his dreams of representing the U.S. men’s national team this summer. Eustace praised Agyemang’s impact on the squad this season and hopes he can rally from it to remain a key player for next season.“He’s been a real focal point for us this season and he’s been outstanding in terms of his development,” Eustace said in his prematch press conference Thursday. “It’s going to be a huge blow to us in terms of not being able to finish the season and to miss the World Cup too because he’s worked his socks off to try and get into that squad. I think he was very close to being there.“It’s part of the job though, part of being a footballer, you’re going to have highs and lows, and now it’s about the Derby County family rallying around him,” he added. “The lads have been magnificent with him and I know the fans have sent him some great messages as well. He’ll come back and come back stronger. It gives him time to have a bit of a break, reset, get strong on some physical areas that might have been giving him an issue. When he comes back he’ll just have to enjoy the next challenge.” Agyemang’s absence means that Carlton Morris will step back in as the club’s leading No. 9 threat with five matches left to play this spring. Derby County travels to Southampton on Saturday in a crucial match for both playoff challengers.
