Police in Apac district, northern Uganda is investigating a violent panga attack in which unknown assailants injured seven students of Apac Seed secondary school on Sunday night. The injured students have been identified as Ivan Ojok Okabo, Jonathan Oyile, Sam Ocen and Bruce Awany, all senior four students. Others are Jonathan Alele, Ronald Odongo and Bonny Odur, all in senior three. Preliminary findings indicate that the attackers used deception to lure the students out of the school premises. One of the suspects reportedly infiltrated the school compound, prompting students to pursue him as he fled over the fence. North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema said the suspect was first spotted near the girls’ dormitory at around 10:00 pm, prompting a male student to attempt to verify his identity. The suspect allegedly fled by jumping over the fence. “In an attempt to apprehend him, one student pursued but was ambushed by a group of assailants who severely cut him. The victim raised an alarm, prompting six other students to rush to his rescue, but they were confronted by a larger group of about 15 attackers armed with pangas,” Okema said. He added that in the ensuing confrontation, all seven students sustained injuries, with three suffering severe wounds to the head, neck, hands and ribs. The injured students were rushed to Apac Main Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Police said a joint team of operational personnel and the K9 unit has since revisited the scene to aid investigations and track down the suspects. The attack a few comes days after the fatal stabbing of four toddlers at Gaba Early Childhood Development Centre in Ggaba, Makindye Division, Kampala. While the suspect in the Kampala incident is in custody, those behind the Apac attack remain at large. Police have not established any link between the two incidents. However, Christopher Okello Onyum, the main suspect in the killing of four toddlers in Gaba, upon arrest last week, reportedly warned that Ugandans are set to witness similar attacks in the coming days and months.
