Andy Reid’s Justin Fields verdict makes ambition clear as Chiefs target 2,000-yard weapon

Wait 5 sec.

Andy Reid has one of the best quarterback rooms in football. Behind franchise superstar Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs now have a former first-round pick in Justin Fields as a backup. Fields will join the Chiefs in a surprise trade, and arrives from the JetsGettyArriving in a trade from the New York Jets after just one season in the Big Apple, the Chiefs only had to part ways with a 2027 sixth-round NFL Draft pick to land Fields.Kansas City now gives the former Ohio State signal caller the chance at reviving his NFL career, after being benched after a 2-8 start to life at MetLife Stadium in 2025, following previous time with the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers.Reid, a three-time Super Bowl winner as the Chiefs’ head coach, has confidence that Fields can do exactly just that.“He’s more than a gadget guy,” Reid told The Athletic’s Jesse Newell a last week’s league meetings.“That’s not how I’m looking at him. That’s not why we brought him in. We brought him in to play quarterback if he’s needed to play quarterback. And then whatever goes from there.”For the first time in his career, Fields was brought into a team with the expectation that he would serve as a backup. But that doesn’t mean he won’t get his opportunities at Arrowhead Stadium, especially to start the 2026 regular season with Mahomes currently recovering from a torn ACL and LCL injury sustained in Week 15 of last season. “It’s not going to be completely foreign to him,” Reid said of the Chiefs’ playbook, due to having previous experience working with OC Matt Nagy in Chicago. “We look forward to getting him in there, but most of all, because he’s a good player. And if Pat (Mahomes) can’t (play) for whatever reason, now you’ve got a legitimate guy in there that can play and win games for you.”“I like his game,” Reid added. “He can do the drop back game. He can do the movement stuff, play-action, whether it’s a naked or sprint-out game. Mahomes and Fields are now teammates for the very first timeGettyLemon would give the Chiefs some much needed deep threat in 2026Getty“He has that whole package that he can do. He understands the screen game and how to set it up. He obviously is going to be one of the better athletes on the field when he’s out there.”Chiefs targeting Lemon in draftFollowing a woeful 6-11 finish in 2025, which saw Kansas City miss out on the postseason for the first time in the Mahomes era, the Chiefs are in dire need of an off-season reset.Having made a plethora of moves to begin the new league year, including the blockbuster trade of All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, the Chiefs own nine draft picks for 2026.Two of these come in the first round, with the No. 9 and No. 29 overall picks. After all-time great tight end Travis Kelce – in his 13th season as a pro – led the Chiefs in receiving yards (851) and touchdowns (five), ahead of Hollywood Brown (587 yards), Rashee Rice (571 yards) and Xavier Worthy (532 yards), the team could be on the hunt for a new wide receiver. According to insider Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs have already hosted USC wideout Makai Lemon in a pre-draft visit.During the 2025 season in South California, Lemon had 79 receptions for 1,156 yards and 11 touchdowns, enough to claim the Biletnikoff Award for being the nation’s top receiver. In three seasons at USC, the 21-year-old tallied over 2,000 yards, averaging 14.7 yards per reception. But the Chiefs face stiff competition to land the highly-touted prospect with Lemon also reported to meet with the Jets, New York Giants, Washington Commanders and Miami Dolphins, after having already spent time with the New Orleans Saints.
