/u/bkturf on I listed a free houseplant and somehow created a competition where strangers auditioned to deserve it

When we first got married, over 40 years ago, I was good with houseplants. We lived in apartments for the first two years, then bought a house. My monstera moved with us every time. The monstera was in a big pot in the corner of the great room. In a couple of years, it had gotten so large it was taking up about a quarter of the room. Since this was in middle Georgia, it didn't get too cold in the winter, so I planted it outside in our lush backyard in a giant bed of pinestraw that also had mimosa and hardwood trees. It was already almost 8 ft in diameter and by the end of that summer it was about 12ft. When it got cold and was going to freeze, I piled it with pinestraw and the leaves died, but it came back from the roots the next spring and would grow to about 8 ft in diameter before it froze every year after that. I also grew orchids at the time and had them hanging from the trees above the monstera, and had a sprinkler about 20ft up in a tree, so every thing got watered every day. I got another monstera about 15 years ago and kept it at the office. It was in the corner, sitting on a tall stand to put it closer to the lights and only had fluorescent lights to grow it which were mounted on the 12ft ceiling. After a couple of years, I got a strong LED floodlight to mount above it, and it really started growing. It got to about 6ft in diameter and I gave it away to a coworker when I retired 5 years ago.
