Jason Cundy calls for Marc Cucurella ban as Chelsea star’s divisive remarks hint at ‘rats starting to leave sinking ship’

Marc Cucurella should have joined Enzo Fernandez on the suspended list at Chelsea for his public criticism of the club hierarchy.Former Blues defender Jason Cundy has once again vented his anger with the left-back amid a tense season run-in at Stamford Bridge.Cucurella was vocal with his frustration over Chelsea and their current situationGettyDuring the international break, Cucurella criticised owners BlueCo and their transfer policy that has prioritised youth over experience. He also questioned the decision to let Enzo Maresca leave in January.Fernandez more notably raised questions over his Chelsea future by fuelling speculation over a potential summer move to Real Madrid. The midfielder, who talkSPORT understands is open to a switch, said he could see himself calling the Spanish capital home.Chelsea took action by suspending Fernandez for the 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale and upcoming clash with Manchester City on Sunday.Cucurella avoided a similar punishment though, with head coach Liam Rosenior insisting he was ‘a separate case’.But Cundy told Cucurella to keep his mouth shut, and has now claimed that he should have also been sidelined for speaking out.“Matisse and I, we had a heated discussion about it last week,” he said on Inside Chelsea. “From a personal point of view, and I said it at the time, keep your mouth shut, that applied to both of them. “I, personally, would have also done the same to Cucurella. I think, to punish… Enzo’s was flirting with Madrid. I don’t want to go over old ground but, that was his decision until it went public. I think Cucurella’s comments as well, not helpful, keep your mouth shut.“You’re paid to play football, get on with your job, you’re not a politician. Do your job better on the pitch, that’s where I would come from.Cundy believes that Cucurella should have been suspended like Fernandez wasGetty“I felt something had to happen, I think there had to be a public display of, ‘This is not on, this is unacceptable. You’re paid by this football club, you work for this football club to go and play football, and to the best of your ability’. “Well, I think it’s fair to say neither of those, and they’re not the only two by the way, have not done that. But they’re the two that chose to speak in public. “I don’t what, as a football club, you’re supposed to do, if you’re Rosenior or the hierarchy, you’ve got to be seen to do something, you can’t let players get away with that.”Host Toby Evenden asked: “You can’t, but did you not feel like what Cucurella was saying did echo a lot of what fans are feeling at the moment?”“I don’t care, I don’t care!” Cundy replied: “He’s not a politician… you don’t speak on behalf of the fans.“You do your speaking with a pair of boots and you go out there with a ball at your feet, that’s how you speak on behalf of me.”Cucurella remains available for Chelsea and is set to start against CityEvenden then claimed that Cucurella’s comments resonated more with Chelsea fans, but Cunday believes his words were ‘a cheap shot’.“He knows how the fans (feel), he’s playing to the gallery,” he added.Eyeing up an exit?Whilst neither Fernandez or Cucurella have outright said they want to leave Chelsea, Cundy suspects they may have one eye out the door. Both are key members of the current Blues squad and on deals that run until 2032 and 2028 respectively. However, Cundy believes they may be prioritising their own interests over Chelsea.Matisse Armani said: “I don’t mind that both of them said it, because I feel like some sort of pressure needed to be put on the hierarchy from inside, from the players themselves. Cundy is wary of players potentially eyeing a move away from the clubGetty“It’s coming from a good place, in my opinion, at least Cucurella’s point of view, maybe you say Fernandez is a little bit more grey, but it’s coming from a place of, ‘We want to win…'”Cundy responded: “Selfish animals, I’ll tell you for nothing. “There is a lot of looking after number one here, the rats starting to think about leaving a sinking ship, that’s what it tells me.”“Keep it in-house,” he added. “If you’ve got something to say, say it privately, and deal with it internally.”Inside Chelsea on talkSPORTtalkSPORT does Chelsea like nowhere else.Stay ahead of every tactical shift, manager sacking and transfer rumour by making talkSPORT’s Inside Chelsea show your weekly go to for all things Blues.Subscribe now to ensure you never miss a beat of the action one episode at a time, sponsored by BetMGM.Download the app or visit BetMGM.co.uk. 18+gambleaware.org
