Disney Leaves Behind Old ‘Star Wars’, Confirms New Era in 2027

The Star Wars galaxy is preparing for a major shift. Nearly 50 years after George Lucas first introduced audiences to a galaxy far, far away, Lucasfilm is charting a course beyond the Skywalker lineage and into largely unexplored storytelling territory.Credit: DisneyThe franchise’s return to theaters is set for next year, marking its first big-screen outing since J. J. Abrams closed out the sequel trilogy with Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019). After several years focused on Disney+ series, this move signals a renewed emphasis on theatrical storytelling. Leading that charge is Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, slated for May 22, 2026, and centered on Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his Force-sensitive companion, Grogu. However, much of the conversation has already shifted toward what follows. During Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo, Former Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and now Co-President Dave Filoni took the stage alongside Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling to reveal Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027.Credit: LucasfilmAccording to StarWars.com, “Set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Gosling will play a brand-new character teased by the actor’s appearance on stage.”The announcement continued: “One of several theatrical projects still in development from Lucasfilm, including films by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and a new trilogy by Simon Kinberg, Levy’s film–Star Wars: Starfighter–will star Gosling and go into production starting this fall.”The ensemble for Starfighter continues to grow, with Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams joining previously announced cast members Mia Goth and Matt Smith. One of the more intriguing additions is Flynn Gray, whose reported co-lead role has already fueled speculation about a Jedi-and-apprentice dynamic.Credit: LucasfilmWhat sets Starfighter apart is its clean break from the Skywalker narrative. Rather than revisiting familiar heroes like Rey, the film explores a post–First Order galaxy populated by entirely new figures and conflicts. As Lucasfilm describes it, the project is “an entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored” and “an all-new standalone adventure.”Levy spoke candidly about joining the franchise, saying, “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true,” said the Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) filmmaker.Despite Lucasfilm’s positioning of the film as a standalone, speculation about a broader plan continues to circulate. Industry chatter suggests Starfighter could serve as the first chapter in a larger arc, potentially linking to other in-development projects. But that rumor has largely been quashed.Credit: DisneyOne rumor pointed to the possible involvement of Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker, who could appear in a limited capacity to connect Starfighter with the long-gestating New Jedi Order film. Reports also hinted at a narrative centered on a Force-sensitive child, guided by his mother—believed to be played by Amy Adams—who may be a Jedi. That storyline could have eventually intersected with Rey’s efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order. With Gosling leading the film and Levy directing from a script by Jonathan Tropper, expectations are already building. Whether it remains a single entry or evolves into something larger, the project is clearly positioned as a major piece of Lucasfilm’s roadmap.Levy, however, has emphasized that the film is designed to stand on its own. In an interview with Collider, he explained: “Well, for one thing, it is different in that it is an all-new non-sequel, non-prequel adventure. It’s new characters, it’s a new timeline. It inherits legacy themes, but it’s really trying to give Star Wars [fans]–and just movie audiences–something fresh, something new,” he said.Credit: LucasfilmHe added, “And with a spirit of play and big-hearted adventure with moments of real levity that, frankly, A New Hope had in a revolutionary way.”Levy also highlighted his collaboration with Gosling and cinematographer Claudio Miranda, saying: “My crew, my DP, Claudio Miranda, Gosling is my kind of central collaborator in the lead role. It’s certainly been a dream come true. My 10-year-old self is on set with me every day,” he said.“In fact, he’s going to catch a flight tonight to go back to the set and keep shooting on Monday. But it’s a huge, invigorating opportunity because Lucasfilm has been so encouraging of me doing something new.” He concluded: “There’s no pressure to be derivative or limited by an obligation to what came before. There’s just a love of what came before.”Credit: LucasfilmLevy reiterated that creative freedom has been central to the project’s development, noting that the studio has consistently pushed for originality over nostalgia-driven choices.“Every time I’ve asked, ‘Should I use this character that was maybe in that movie?’ Every time it’s, ‘You know what? People have seen that. Do something new,'” the director told The Playlist.“There is no mandate or interference other than the constant encouragement, ‘Make this new.’ And that’s the truth,” he continued. “Unlike Solo… unlike Rise of Skywalker, which was a sequel to two other movies and ultimately a ninth film in the Skywalker saga, Starfighter is all new characters based on new ideas that Jonathan and I cooked up alone and together.”Credit: LucasfilmSince Disney acquired Lucasfilm, each movie in its slate has been tethered to other projects. The sequel trilogy is part of the huge Skywalker Saga, while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) is a direct prequel to Star Wars: Episode IV–A New Hope (1977), and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) is an origin story for one of the most iconic characters from the franchise of all time. Even the coming movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is a follow-up to three seasons of TV.
