An investment of approximately €1.5 million will strengthen epilepsy treatments, with over 4,000 people set to benefit from free medication. The Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, announced that this funding will provide access to epilepsy medicines at no cost to patients. It was explained that drug-resistant epilepsy is a condition in which seizures persist despite appropriate treatment with medicinal therapies. This often leads to frequent and unpredictable seizures, significantly affecting daily functioning, education, employment and the overall quality of life of patients and their families. The condition is also associated with a higher risk of injuries, hospital admissions and long-term complications. These medicines will be available in both tablet and liquid form.Minister Jo Etienne Abela stated that this investment represents a strong and concrete financial commitment by the Government to further enhance access to modern and effective treatments for people living with epilepsy. “This step reflects the Government’s determination to continue investing in ways that deliver direct value to Maltese and Gozitan families, through stronger healthcare services that are closer to people’s needs,” said Dr Abela. The Minister added that this investment will expand the Government Formulary by around 15 new medicines for epilepsy care. Access to these treatments is expected to improve seizure control, reduce pressure on acute healthcare services and enhance quality of life.“The introduction of these medicines is another step towards fairer access to care and improved quality of life for people with epilepsy and their families. With this expansion of the Government Formulary, the message is clear: essential treatment should no longer depend on exceptions, but should form an integral part of the standards within our healthcare system,” Dr Abela concluded.Tag someone you know is interested•
