Chelsea have made frequent trips to Brighton in transfer windows, and been tipped to return for another key target. The Inside Chelsea panel on talkSPORT have backed the Blues to sign Jan Paul van Hecke to address a glaring issue in their defence.Chelsea have been unable to overcome their defensive woes this seasonGettySince Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed their £4.25billion takeover at Chelsea in 2022, Brighton have been a go-to destination.Marc Cucurella, Robert Sanchez, Moises Caicedo and Joao Pedro are among the talents to swap the south coast for west London.Graham Potter also made the move to Chelsea four years ago, while former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi was a candidate in 2024.It’s been a mostly successful trend for the Blues, and one that Jason Cundy and Toby Evenden would be keen to see make a re-appearance.On the latest episode of Inside Chelsea, the pair and Matisse Armani were discussing their centre-back options ahead of the summer.“If you want to start talking about moving forward and see actions being taken, that’s a big area for me,” Cundy said. “Probably the biggest on the pitch, and I’m talking about the goalkeeping situation as well, also up top. Centre-half, massive, get that sorted.”Host Evenden then revealed his dream target, who he likened to cult hero and the former physical forward Diego Costa.“There’s a player that caught my eye, seems quite Chelsea, Van Hecke. I feel like he’s quite suited to… what I enjoy in a lot of Chelsea players, bit of a Diego Costa of a centre-back, that kind of type.”“Who does he play for?” Cundy jokingly asked. “Honestly, we can’t keep going there!”Van Hecke has been eyed as a defensive target for ChelseaGettyCundy may have appeared to be against a return to Brighton but for Evenden, it could bring further success to Chelsea.“In all honesty, if you look at our Brighton business, it’s some of the better business they’ve made,” he claimed.“They have a model and for some reason, they might have like a microchip in their neck that when they sell players, their quality drops,” Cundy replied.“I don’t know what they… no, that’s unfair, I’m being unkind. But I don’t know whether we can go back to Brighton again.”However, the former Chelsea defender made it clear that 25-year-old Dutch international Van Hecke is a player that intrigues him.“For me, Van Hecke, there’s a lot to like, there’s a lot of boxes ticked for me.”Van Hecke has even been compared to former Chelsea striker CostaGettyChelsea’s clear transfer priorityWith 50 matches played across all competitions this season, Chelsea have conceded a total of 68 goals, an average of 1.4-per-game.It’s therefore understandable that the Inside Chelsea panelists are keen on bringing a new centre-back to the club.Levi Colwill, a key starter at the back, has been out for the entire season whilst recovering from an ACL injury.Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato, Josh Acheampong and Mamadou Sarr have all played. But for Evenden and Cundy, Chelsea need to sign another option in a move that could have a big impact on their long-term future.“It does feel like the big make or break, to a degree, signing for this project,” Evenden said.Rosenior will be thinking of potential targets ahead of the summerGetty“Last summer, it felt like we needed a centre-back, especially when Colwill got injured.”Cundy agreed, adding: “That’s a big decision for me. If I was in charge of recruitment, that’s my first place to go, centre-half. Stop leaking goals, because we are so porous, we give away such weird goals. “What I can’t get out of my head is the (Sam) Smith goal away at Wrexham (in the FA Cup), that goal down the middle, that gives me nightmares even now… it’s one punt down the field and you’ve got, was it Badiashile and Tosin? “I don’t want to drag anyone. But whoever it was, ball over the top, one touch, finish, he looked like Crespo! That goal there in itself should be the goal where you go, ‘That cannot happen.'”Inside Chelsea on talkSPORTtalkSPORT does Chelsea like nowhere else.Stay ahead of every tactical shift, manager sacking and transfer rumour by making talkSPORT’s Inside Chelsea show your weekly go to for all things Blues.Subscribe now to ensure you never miss a beat of the action one episode at a time, sponsored by BetMGM.Download the app or visit BetMGM.co.uk. 18+gambleaware.org
