A 53-year-old Nigerian man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after admitting that he entered Malta carrying 100 capsules containing nearly one kilogram of cocaine, rather than proceeding to trial according to TVM News. Stanley Anayo Chukwu Chukwukere was arrested at Malta International Airport on 2nd July last year, shortly after arriving in Malta from Brussels.Although nothing was initially found on him during a search, police later took him to Mater Dei Hospital, where he admitted to swallowing 100 cocaine capsules. He was then brought before the court, where he pleaded not guilty to possession and importation of drugs and remained under arrest.He was due to stand trial, but the prosecution and defence reached an agreement that if he admitted the charges, he would be sentenced to eight years in prison and fined €15,000. The 981 grams of cocaine were estimated to have a purity of 87% and a street value of around €57,900.Judge Natasha Galea Sciberras approved the agreement between both sides and handed down the sentence. She also ordered him to pay a total of €1,559 to four court experts appointed in the case.•
