Luke Farrugia has responded to accusations of racism after sharing a video showing a person allegedly breaking the law in Marsa. In the footage, a man is seen acting in a way Farrugia described as treating illegal behaviour “as if it were normal”. The clip prompted backlash online, with some users accusing the mayor of targeting the individual based on nationality. In a follow-up statement, Farrugia rejected those claims, saying the person in the video did not appear to be of a dark complexion and insisting his criticism had nothing to do with race.“In what universe can a Labour, socialist mayor of Marsa be racist?” he wrote, adding that he is “against anything that is wrong” regardless of who commits it.Farrugia also said that even if the individual is of foreign nationality, “that is not my fault”, maintaining that the issue is about law enforcement, not identity. The mayor acknowledged the political fallout, stating he would accept losing future elections over the issue if necessary, saying he would still be satisfied “because the locality got what it deserved”.Ending his statement, he reiterated: “Wrong remains wrong.”Do you agree with his response?Photo: Luke Farrugia•
