Jaguars backtrack on ‘statement’ draft deal as decision made on unicorn Travis Hunter’s NFLfuture

Wait 5 sec.

Travis Hunter’s status as a game-changing two-way NFL player is on the back burner – for 2026 at least.Last year’s No. 2 pick entered the NFL as a generational prospect, having starred as both a wide receiver and cornerback in college.Hunter will be limited on offense after injury ended his rookie seasonGettyThe Jags traded up the draft order to get their guy, and gave up their No. 5 and No. 36 picks in 2025, as well as a first-rounder in 2026, to the Cleveland Browns.General Manager James Gladestone could not hide his delight – words that may yet come back to haunt him.“He is also a reminder that the boundaries of the game of football were built to be challenged and so the decision to select him was actually a statement,” he said the day after drafting the former Colorado star.“A statement for how we plan to move, who were are. “It’s a deal that has been scrutinized since, given injury limited Hunter to just seven games in a rookie season that saw both an offensive and defensive workload. His final outing of the year came in London against the Los Angeles Rams, where the 22-year-old appeared to stake a claim as Jacksonville’s No. 1 receiver, partly because of his playmaking ability, but also because of Brian Thomas Jr.’s struggles. At Wembley Stadium, he scored his first NFL career touchdown on a 34-yard pass from Trevor Lawrence, and finished the game with eight receptions for 101 yards. But in 2026, the Jaguars will take Hunter in a different direction — and risk resigning him to the status of ‘draft bust’.Jaguars make big Travis Hunter decisionNFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that the team expects their two-way star to be a ‘full-time corner and a part-time receiver’ next season.Hunter is also expected to be a full participant in training camp as he makes his comeback from the LCL tear that ended his debut season.Jaguars insider DiRocco detailed how the team will use Hunter moving forwardYouTube/talkSPORT USARapoport suggestion of the Jags limiting Hunter echoes the verdict of ESPN’s Mike DiRocco, who earlier this week broke down how Jacksonville will use their star moving forward.“There is no doubt that he’s playing both ways, but I think as the season begins, as camp begins, they’re viewing him as their top corner and that’s where he’s going to spend a lot of his time in camp,” DiRocco said in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT.“OTAs, in the beginning part of the season, they need him more there. (Greg) Newsome’s not back. Montaric Brown is a starter on one side, they need the starter on the other.“Jourdan Lewis, who started there, is coming off a bad foot injury, so his availability at the start of camp is unsure and he’s probably going to end up playing nickel when Travis is in there at corner.“So I think we’ll see him early as a majority corner. That’s what he’s going to be.”How ‘smart’ Liam Coen can keep NFL defenses guessing with Travis HunterDiRocco, who has covered the Jags since 2013, went on to note that head coach Liam Coen will be key in keeping Hunter a threat on offense moving forward. The former Heisman Trophy winner is expected to be involved in gadget plays as a wideout, to make full use of his playmaking ability with limited time on the field.Hunter has clear playmaking ability, but will be used sparingly on offenseGettyDiRocco continued: “Last year, and I don’t have the numbers in front of me, I think in the seven games, he played 67 percent of the offensive snaps and I want to say like 35-36 percent of the defensive snaps.“I would see that flipped in the early part of the season, where it’s probably closer to 80-90 percent of the defensive snaps, at least until we see how the defense plays out.“Theoretically, they don’t need him as much on offense, but when they look at him and they see his ball skills… he’s just crazy good with the ball in his hands. So, they want to get that on the field because it just makes them better.“The problem you run into there is, ‘Okay, he’s only going to play 10 offensive snaps.’ Well, you’re going to try and get him the ball on most of those. So, it is a little bit of a tell to the defense.“I think that’s where the Liam Coen factor comes in, how smart he is and the ability to create mismatches and get the defense thinking this, and then it’s that.”Is Travis Hunter trade already a bust for Jaguars?Jacksonville’s decision to limit their ‘unicorn’ on offense has raised eyebrows.Fans have been quick to point out that the team has effectively paid a hefty price to draft a cornerback No. 2 overall — something that’s unheard of in the NFL.‘Bust’ questions have been raised after Hunter’s move to full-time CBGettyThere will be no first-round pick for the Jags in 2026, either, as part of that deal with the Browns. When the team traded up 12 months ago, GM James Gladstone touted Hunter as a ‘statement’ talent who was coming in to elevate the entire roster and help transform Jacksonville into Super Bowl contenders. But based on an injury-hit rookie season, and the decision to have him operate primarily in the defensive backfield from now on, Hunter will now have to battle claims he was unable to live up to that post-draft hype.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
