Steven Gerrard doesn’t want Arne Slot to lose his job, but the next three games have him worried for the manager’s position.Liverpool’s iconic ex-captain has been touted as a potential interim candidate if the Dutchman is sacked, but told talkSPORT that he remains a huge fan of the current Reds head coach.Gerrard worries for Slot’s position if Champions League qualification slips awayGettySlot has found himself under increasing pressure in the Anfield hotseat despite lifting the Premier League less than a year ago.Liverpool spent a record £446million last summer on new arrivals, but made a miserable defence of their top-flight crown. The Reds are a whopping 21 points adrift of leaders Arsenal and are in danger of missing out on qualifying for the Champions League.Ironically, that competition is now the club’s only opportunity to lift silverware this season after their defeat to Manchester City.Liverpool endured their heaviest FA Cup defeat in 80 years on Saturday after suffering a 4-0 FA Cup defeat at the Etihad.Gerrard agreed with the assessment that his former side had started the match positively, but was alarmed by their capitulation.More worryingly, the 114-cap England hero was shocked by Virgil van Dijk’s post-match assessment that suggested the players gave up.“They had the chances, which they never took, and I think we all know in the big games, you’ve got to take your chances when they come along,” he told Ally McCoist and Gabby Agbonlahor on Breakfast.“Take nothing away from City, they were outstanding over the course of the game, but it was really worrying and concerning the way Liverpool did crumble, and also even more alarming what the players are saying after the game, in terms of saying there’s no fight, we gave the game up.“At Liverpool football club, that can’t happen on the pitch, and it certainly can’t be said off the pitch, so worrying times, I must say.”Gerrard admitted it was alarming what Liverpool players had said after losing to Man CityCause for concernJust as disheartening for Gerrard and Liverpool has been the rapid decline of Salah following his player of the season campaign last year. The 33-year-old missed his second successive penalty for the Reds last weekend in what was his first game since announcing his exit.“I think in terms of the sadness,” Gerrard continued. “I’m feeling that more than you, let me tell you, in terms of watching them individually and collectively.“Because they’ve come so far away from the team identity, what they’ve set in terms of standards for the past years, they’ve been so high collectively, and Mo Salah’s been at the forefront of that.“So they’ve set such high standards, to come so far away from that is very noticeable, let me tell you right now, Ali, you’re not feeling as sad as me right now. “But listen, I think they’ve got an opportunity this week to try and galvanise something from the season.Salah’s final match against Man City as a Liverpool player was a miserable oneGetty“So far, I think the players have admitted it, the managers have admitted it hasn’t been good enough, but they’ve still got a chance this week.“It’s a huge week, on the back of a really poor performance, against Manchester City, they’ve got to stand up and be counted individually and collectively.“They’ve got to stick together, and they’ve got to try and grasp the opportunity, and put pressure on, the likes of Aston Villa and United from a league point of view, with the Fulham game, which I think is arguably just as important as the two Champions League games.“And they’ve just got to go and give it everything they’ve got against this PSG team.“Try and take the game to Anfield next week, use the crowd and try and galvanise something from the season.“Because if the week goes the other way, and they don’t do that, and they don’t try and galvanise something from the season, unfortunately the pressure, the heat, the intensity is going to come even more on the players, and certainly on Arne Slot as well, which from a fan point of view right now, I don’t want to see.”Slot has overseen another defeat during a tough second season at LiverpoolGettyGerrard on Arne Slot’s futurePremier League champions Liverpool currently sit fifth in the table, five points adrift of Aston Villa and six behind Manchester United.A defeat to Fulham could stretch that gap even further, and may also mean Slot’s men could even themselves level on points with rivals Everton ahead of the Merseyside derby in a fortnight.Even more ominous is that Liverpool’s clash with the Cottagers is sandwiched between their two biggest games of the season. The Reds renew hostilities with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals, having crashed out of Europe last year to PSG en route to the Ligue 1’s road to glory. However, Gerrard argued that qualifying for UEFA’s top competition for next season remains just as important as the two-legged tie.He added: “I think it’s key, Gabby, I must say, and that’s why I say in the previous question, I think the Fulham game is just as important.Slot has a maximum of seven games to save Liverpool’s domestic season“I think if the ownership and the people above, they see that gap, the villa, and United stretches or gets any worse, I worry for the manager’s position. “I don’t want to see that happen. I’m a huge fan of Arne Slot. I was blown away by his first season.“I must say, he’s a good man, he’s obviously a very, very good coach, the job he’s done.“I think the key to this situation will be the Fulham game, in terms of if he can put more heat on United and Villa, and he can stay in the PSG game into next week, I think everything will be fine and in a better place in five, six days’ time.“But if this was to get any worse, I’d be worried for the manager, I must say.”Szoboszlai’s been amazingHaving worn the No.8 shirt since arriving at Anfield in 2023, Dominik Szoboszlai has continued to draw comparisons with Stevie-G.Gerrard believes Liverpool’s next three games are massively important in the future of the clubThe Hungary captain – who addressed those links in front of the man himself in February – even has a tattoo inspired by the ex-Liverpool skipper.Despite often playing out of position at right-back, Szoboszlai has scored 12 goals and registered eight assists in all competitions.“100 per cent [he’s been the club’s player of the season], certainly being Liverpool’s most consistent player,” Gerrard added.“I think [Hugo] Ekitike run him close, for a period of time he seems to have fell away a little bit in his last couple of Liverpool performances, although he went away with France and done well.“And I’m a big fan of him, but you’d have to say that, in terms of in the run-up for player of the season, for Liverpool, it has to be Szoboszlai.Gerrard is a huge fan of his successor as Liverpool’s No.8Getty“He’s been amazing, he’s been versatile, he’s been exciting. I think he’s added world-class strikes and free kicks to his game.“I think the future’s really bright for him. I think he’s only going to get better and better, so yes, I’ve been really impressed with him.”1: Premier League Fixtures & Results
