Ġħajnsielem Mayor Kevin Cauchi has issued a strong warning over the growing misuse of nitrous oxide, “laughing gas” in Għajnsielem, after sharing a photo and video on Facebook showing discarded canisters scattered in natural areas.Cauchi said the “legal” recreational use of laughing gas is not only causing serious long-term harm among young people, but is also increasingly damaging the local environment through widespread littering in open spaces. He called on the authorities to urgently address the issue, urging tighter regulation and insisting that recreational use of nitrous oxide should be classified as illegal.Cauchi highlighted that France’s Savoie region has recently restricted nitrous oxide use, citing concerns over road traffic accidents as well as neurological, vascular, and psychiatric risks linked to consumption. He contrasted this with the local situation, stating: “Yet in Malta it is perfectly legal with rampant use in our open spaces,” adding that existing legal loopholes must be closed without delay. What do you make of this?•
