Chandigarh: Three inmates ‘attack’ another prisoner in Burail jail, injure him

By: Express News ServiceChandigarh | October 5, 2025 01:08 AM IST 2 min readThe jail authorities informed the Sector-49 police station, following which a case was registered (Representative image)A violent clash broke out inside Model Jail, Burail, on Friday morning when three inmates allegedly attacked another prisoner with a sharp weapon, leaving him injured.The victim was identified as Ritivik Bharadwaj, 26, who has been lodged in jail in connection with a firing case.As per the police, the incident occurred inside the jail dispensary, where Ritivik had gone for a medical check-up accompanied by jail staff.According to his complaint, as soon as he reached near the main gate of the dispensary, fellow inmates Rajat Tiwari, Sukhwinder Singh, and Sunny intercepted him. Sunny allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon and struck him on the head, causing him to collapse and bleed profusely. Jail staff immediately intervened, stopped the scuffle, and rushed him for treatment. He got multiple stitches in his head, and his condition was later reported to be stable.The jail authorities informed the Sector-49 police station, following which a case was registered.As per the police, an FIR was registered at Sector 49 police station, Chandigarh, on the complaint of Ritivik Bharadwaj, Model Jail, Burail, Chandigarh, against Rajat Tiwari, Sunny, and Sukhwinder Singh, all residents of Model Jail, Burail. The complainant alleged that he was beaten inside the jail on October 3. Investigation of the case is in progress.Police sources said that the attack appears to be the fallout of an old enmity. The accused inmates have a criminal background — Rajat Tiwari has been in jail since 2019 in connection with a murder case, while Sukhwinder Singh and Sunny are also allegedly involved in multiple criminal cases.The complainant himself is an accused in several firing incidents. He, along with his associate Aman, was arrested by the Operation Cell of Mohali police for opening fire at a gym owner and for a September 26 shooting at Hotel Diljot in Kajheri, Sector 53.
