Iman Beney scored her first goal for Manchester City Women as the Blues inflicted Arsenal’s first defeat of the WSL season. The Swiss international came off the bench to hammer home the goal that gave the Blues the three points and send them up to second place in the WSL.Bunny Shaw had given City a first-half lead and Kerstin Casparij had put the Blues back in front after Mariona Caldentey had levelled at the start of the second half. Former Blue Chloe Kelly brought Arsenal level for the second time, but City wouldn’t be denied the points in the post Gareth Taylor era.City had lost back-to-back league matches at home to the Gunners, with last season’s 4-3 defeat signalling the beginning of the end of Taylor’s reign at the Joie Stadium. After an opening day defeat at Chelsea, questions were asked if City would be able to compete with the league’s top teams, now that Taylor is out of the picture. But the Blues answered that question on Sunday afternoon as they dug deep and fought hard to claim the three points, despite twice being pegged back.It was a typical cagey affair at the beginning, with both teams slightly reluctant to go forward, with the weather conditions adding the the defenders nerves on such a big occasion. But the Blues stepped it up. After City had previously hit the bar, Vivianne Miedema was denied another goal against her old club and Grace Clinton couldn’t guide the follow-up into the back of the goal.City ere beginning to turn the screw on the visitors as the half wore on, but they didn’t have it all their own way. with Caitlin Foord testing the City keeper. Foord was offside but Yamashita wasn’t to know that and produce a smart safe to prevent the goal from bulging.City made the breakthrough nine minutes from time and it was Casparij, who is excelling in her new position, who provided it. Aoba Fujino had two Arsenal players around her but had the presence of mind to play in the Dutch star, who was making an excellent run from midfield. Her cross found the head of Bunny Shaw and the Jamaican striker headed down and into the goal to put City in front,Casparij, who is having an amazing season already, thought she’d doubled City’s lead minutes later. Beating the offside trap, Casperij stormed forward and played in Shaw. The striker beat the defender and keeper but her shot was weak and Casperij made sure from close range. Celebrations were short-lived as she was shown to be a good distance offside and it remained at 1-0 going into the break. And City were made to pay for not taking that chance moments into the secon half as Caldentey drew Arsenal level. A run down the right found Caldentey in space and she was able to beat Yamashita with a powerful shot. But City heads didn’t drop and Casparij put City back in front on 61 minutes. A corner on the city right wasn’t dealt with by the keeper and Casparij’s scuffed shot crept over the line to give City the advantage once more. And that goal looked like being enough for the three points until Kelly made an appearance. in the 83rd minute, the former Blue hero fired a rocket into the back of the goal to bring Arsenal level again. The former star then showed a little bit of crass, tapping the Arsenal badge and shouting towards the City fans, forgetting that her issues were with Taylor, not the supporters. But it was the Faithful who would have the last laugh as Beney grabbed her first goal in City Blue. A long ball over the top was controlled by Shaw and played to Beney. A fortunate ricochet of the defender left Beney in the clear and the Swiss star took her time before firing home past the keeper and giving City the points.Blues find a wayCity have had such a poor record against the top teams in the WSL and when Chloe Kelly levelled, it would have been the easiest option to go for the draw. That was the Gareth Taylor era and, to be fair, City would probably have not been in that position had Taylor been in charge. All too often under the former boss, City just couldn’t perform, or sit back and wait for the inevitable onslaught. But this is the new City. This is Andree Jeglertz’s Blues and already, the new boss seems to have instilled a fight in the girls to not give up until the very end.And that was evident on Saturday afternoon. Despite the Gunners impressive strike force, they were often starved of service or kept at bay by a resolute defence that is becoming harder and harder to beat. But, as strong as the defence is, they still have to go down the other end and score goal. And what a difference Kirsten Casparij is making in that department. A goal against Spurs two weeks ago and another today shows what she can do when played in the right position. All too often. Taylor played the Dutch star in the full-back position when Casparij just wanted to tear forward and take on the defence. Under Jeglertz, Casparij is thriving, being given the freedom to do what she couldn’t under Taylor. Her marauding forward has seen her contribute last week for Miedema and she claimed a goal and an assist today. Casparij is not only a player in form, but has the look of someone who is finally enjoying her football, free from the shackles that have held her in defence.Crass from Kelly, but somehow expectedThere seems to be a theme with Chloe Kelly that follows her around. In her first spell at Arsenal, she engineered a loan move to Everton before making the transfer permanent. She joined City after rejecting a new contract with the Toffees, and was eventually loaned out to Arsenal, before again, making the move permanent, citing she didn’t see her future at City. Her celebration when scoring for the Gunners was seemingly aimed at the City fans, with whom, she’d had no problem. The majority of the Faithful knew that the issue lay firmly with Taylor, who had a habit of freezing players out before they eventually left the club. But that didn’t stop the former star from slapping the Arsenal badge voraciously, as if somehow this was a message to the Faithful of where her loyalties lie. Iman Beney’s late goal spoiled her celebrations and Arsenal’s party, with sections of the Faithful singing ‘Chloe, what’s the score?‘ at the final whistle. It’s not usual for the Faithful to act in such a way to their former players, but when one acts in such a manner towards them in the first place, their reaction should hardly come as a surprise.
