Noahkai Banks scores first senior Augsburg goal

It was a memorable first Bundesliga start for U.S. men’s national team defender Noahkai Banks. Banks scored his first goal for Augsburg in Saturday’s 3-1 home victory over Wolfsburg. The 18-year-old defender got the starting nod in Sandro Wagner’s squad and wasted little time in opening his goalscoring account.Banks arrived at the back post on a corner kick to finish off Mert Komur’s cross. Komur doubled Augsburg’s lead in the 51st minute before Robin Fellhauer extended the hosts lead after the hour mark. Despite a consolation goal from Wolfsburg, Augsburg would hang on to snap its four-match winless run. Banks, who received his first USMNT call-up in September, had made two prior starts for Augsburg before Saturday’s appearance. The young centerback has mainly featured in a back-three for the German club during his time with the first team. He has previously featured for the USMNT U-17’s U-19’s and U-20’s. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet that I was able to help the team with my first Bundesliga goal,” Banks said in a postmatch club interview. “We were all highly motivated and knew exactly how important this match was, the coach prepared us really well for it. The quality in this team has always been there, and today we showed it on the pitch. It was such a special afternoon for me – my whole family was here, even my grandma for the first time.”Augsburg will return to league play on October 18 against Cologne seeking to build on its current 13th place standing.
