The Kansas City Chiefs face an uncommon situation in their Week 5 clash against the Jacksonville Jaguars. That’s because they’ll be coming against Travis Hunter, who was selected with the second overall pick in April’s draft, who has the unusual distinction of playing both wide receiver and cornerback.Travis Hunter has been the center of attention again ahead of his clash with Mahomes and the ChiefsThe Heisman Trophy winner drew plaudits for playing both sides of the ball during his time with Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes in college. However, Hunter has failed to live up to his billing through four games in the NFL, with his debut deemed uninspiring and fans and analysts alike increasingly call for him to focus on one position.Hunter has played more WR than CB throughout his first four NFL games, and has lined up exclusively in the slot. He has recorded 13 catches for 118 yards, and has yet to score his first touchdown. On defense, the Jaguars have selectively rotated him into the secondary in specific situations. In coverage so far, Hunter has been targeted seven times, allowing six catches for 71 yards, and he’s yet to give up a touchdown. However, he’s hardly catching fire at either position and so far it’s been an underwhelming start.Brian Smith, talkSPORT’s senior NFL reporter, wrote previously that Hunter has felt invisible. “There’s been nothing brilliant about Hunter’s initial two pro games, and it’s been surprisingly easy to miss him on the field – on both sides of the ball,” Smith said. Mahomes and Reid praise Hunter’s qualitiesThe Jags take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football in Week 5.Despite his lukewarm start to the NFL, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes have praised Hunter for his versatility and what they’ve seen so far.“You get a good player,” Reid said of Hunter on Thursday. “You’d love to be able to do that (play two ways). It takes a special guy to jump in there and be able to do that. “My hat goes off to the kid. It’s hard being a rookie, and really hard knowing both sides of the ball.”Hunter has featured more as a wideout than a lockdown corner, but Mahomes nevertheless praised the rookie’s qualities on defense.“I’ve watched his (Hunter) defensive snaps,” Mahomes also said on Thursday. Travis Hunter has drawn praise for his commitment to two positionsGettyAndy Reid will look to get the Chiefs their third win after starting 2-2 for the seasonGetty“He was a super talented player in college, and it was fun to watch him at Colorado make plays happen and coming out in the draft process.“He’s special when he gets the football in his hand and being able to break tackles and make guys miss. “Then seeing him play defense, he’s done a great job in this scheme of playing man and zone (coverage), and being around the football as well. “He’s a special football player, and also someone that we will have to account for when he’s out there on the field.”Mahomes told reporters he’s watched film on Travis HunterGETTYJaguars’ have a gameplan for HunterAmid the criticism around Hunter’s commitment to playing two positions, members of the Jaguars’ coaching staff have spoken about his development and what the plan for him is.“It’s certainly like anything in the game plan where you’re evaluating it. Every single week, you’re evaluating it and then even during the week you’re evaluating it as you’re building the game plan,” Jags offensive coordinator Grant Udinski said.“We know there’s a lot being asked of him mentally and physically with offense, defense. So, we want to try to keep things as efficient as possible while still capitalizing on those talents. You see it on that third down and you see it in different situations when he gets a catch and run. So, we’re always exploring what’s the best way we can get him on the field and let him go play fast, go play free without detracting from all the other things he has to do.”“There’s absolutely a push and pull of saying what’s too much, what’s enough? Because we want to try to maximize and at the same time optimize his time on the field.”If Hunter is to establish his credentials as an elite two-way player, there are very few better stages to showcase his obvious talents than a MNF clash against the Chiefs.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
