With one simple act, Declan Rice has enraged the celebration police. The midfielder opened the scoring for Arsenal in their clash against West Ham United with a first-time effort inside the box. Rice’s strike came after Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola produced a solid stop to deny a powerful shot from Eberechi Eze inside the box. After Rice fired the ball high into the roof against his former side and in front of the travelling West Ham supporters, all eyes were fixated on whether he would celebrate or not.The 26-year-old chose the latter as he jogged around the back of the goal before being mobbed by his teammates.Adrian Durham lets rip over Declan Rice’s non-celebrationHowever, the fact Rice didn’t celebrate his goal left talkSPORT’s chief live football anchor Adrian Durham annoyed.“What a mug,” Durham said on talkSPORT’s GameDay Live.“Just celebrate. You scored a goal in the Premier League.“Seriously, if it means that much, if it hurts that much, then don’t sign for another London club. Go abroad or go to Scotland or something.”Offering the flip side of the argument, talkSPORT’s resident West Ham fan Ian ‘Moose’ Abrahams said: “He was in the club’s academy. “Let him show some respect.”Durham asked his co-commentator Dean Ashton, who made 56 appearances for the Hammers during his career, whether he’d celebrate a goal in similar circumstances, to which the one-time England international replied: “Of course.”Match StatsDurham continued: “It’s unbelievable he didn’t celebrate that goal.“Don’t like that, at all.”Has Rice pulled a similar stunt before? It’s not the first time Rice has scored and refused to celebrate against West Ham.Rice, who made 242 appearances for the Hammers before joining Arsenal for an eye-watering £105million in 2023, scored a screamer against his former club in his first season with the Gunners. It was one of six goals in a 6-0 mauling by Mikel Arteta’s side in February 2024, with Rice chipping in with two assists.Rice’s non-celebrations have not been limited to club games, either.GettyRice is no stranger to a non-celebration at club and international level[/caption]The 26-year-old got on the scoresheet for England as they beat Ireland 2-0 in September 2024.But Rice, who made three appearances for Ireland before he switched his international allegiance to England in 2019, held his hands aloft as if to apologise for scoring.Rice was on hand to provide the assist for England’s second goal of the match, which was scored by Jack Grealish, who had represented Ireland at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-21 level. Why didn’t Rice choose to celebrate his goal for England against Ireland? But Grealish elected not to follow Rice’s lead as he celebrated his goal in front of the travelling England supporters.Speaking to talkSPORT after the match, Rice explained his decision not to bask in his goal was out of respect to some of his Irish family members.“Obviously they were going to give a hostile reception to me and Jack, but you know, we take it on the chin,” Rice said.“Obviously we made our decisions, what, seven years ago?“Now it is really irrelevant and now it is time that we just put it to bed because I’ve been playing for England now for five years, and obviously Jack as well. So we’ve got nothing bad to say.“We have Irish family, my nan and grandad… that’s why I didn’t celebrate.“I think it would have been disrespectful to them and obviously what I did when I was playing for Ireland.”
