Rock Is a Lady’s Modesty Shows How Music Builds Bridges

Wait 5 sec.

Rock is a Lady’s Modesty is for sure a manga and anime designed to play up the comedic dissonance between apparently prim and proper young ladies at a girl’s high school going all out when behind their instruments, but it’s more than that. Once the tone is set in the first volume, the second really prioritizes how Oushin’s Girl’s Academy model students Lilisa Suzunomiya and Otoha Kurogane use it for more than a means of being themselves. We see multiple examples showcasing how it allows these two figures who tend to put on a mask of sorts for classmates and other people to truly connect with other people. Editor’s Note: There will be some spoilers for volume 2 of the Rock is a Lady’s Modesty manga below. There are a few distinct relationships that come up as a results of events in the second volume of Rock is a Lady’s Modesty, but for the sake of avoiding spoilers let’s focus on two of them. The most notable early one involves Lilisa’s stepsister Alice. She hates Lilisa’s mother Yuka for getting so swept up in the family that she’s bending over backward and pushing her way in a way that she feels she doesn’t belong. Because she only knows Lilisa as someone who also seems to be playing the perfect part and doing whatever Yuka says, she feels the same way toward her. The first volume ended with us seeing this clear grudge, and that continues as the second volume begins. So much so that she’s adamant she’ll find a way to push both out of the family. In some series, you’d expect this sort of setup to involve an opportunity to introduce an antagonist. But Rock is a Lady’s Modesty isn’t a typical type of manga. As the message is all about positivity and being true to yourself, this plot point in the second volume doesn’t turn into a chance for Alice to get what she needs to try and ruin Lilisa. Instead, it’s more heartwarming. She’s always only seen and known one side of her new sister. Because of Lilisa and Otoha helping out with a brass band for a small music festival and Alice coincidentally being there with a friend of her own, we see that facade broken. The performance lets her see who her stepsister truly is. While it doesn’t mean an immediate change in the way Alice treats her, it helps with forming a new connection and providing an opportunity.  It’s that same performance that provides other chances. Because of the experience, Otoha wants to form a band with Lilisa. She thinks it’d be best to try and recruit and, after thinking it over, the other girl agrees. It’s then that we see how a single fill-in performance with a brass band can shape perceptions and create opportunities. Tina Isemi, another Oshin Girls’ Academy student, approaches Lilisa. It’s because of her seeing the performance and then catching her underclassman practicing at school that she wants to get to know her and pursue her own dreams. We see how Otoha and Lilisa inspired her by being themselves, and that she wants it for herself as well.Go Ad-Free With Siliconera+View the site with no ads, be able to provide direct feedback about what we cover, and be automatically entered into our monthly PC game giveaway.Join Siliconera+ Meanwhile, that show caught another performer’s eye. Tamaki Shiraya messages cryptically after the performance as “Shiro” reaching out to “Kuro.” This offers an insight into Otoha’s past, as she’s had a reputation for her performance before. However, at the same time, it seems to be building up for the second volume to end with a similar sort of situation as the first. While there are potentials for new members, Tamaki seems to only be interested in one thing, and that could work to the detriment of the development and relationships between people like Lilisa, Otoha, and Tina.  While the first volume of Rock is a Lady’s Modesty felt like a means of establishing the tone and the personalities for Lilisa and Otoha, the second seems designed to show how being true to yourself leads to new relationships. The duo gain respect from near strangers for their performances. Lilisa goes from a having a hostile relative to one actually interested in her. More people are inspired by their performance, so much so that they want to be like them. We see these connections form because people decide to live the way they want.  Volume 1 and 2 of Rock is a Lady’s Modesty is available now, and Yen Press will release volume 3 of the manga on August 25, 2026.
