Kentucky Derby contenders Commandment and Renegade share more than just the top two spots on T.D. Thornton's TDN's Derby Top 20. Both Grade I winners are sons of supersire Into Mischief, both are out of graded stakes-winning mares and both were foaled and raised at Taylor Made Farm.Taylor Made's Frank Taylor noted that their team has enjoyed the ride of watching these two star colts progress toward the first Saturday in May. The high point so far was on March 28 when Commandment captured the GI Florida Derby in a dramatic victory over The Puma (Essential Quality) and Chief Wallabee (Constitution). An hour later, Renegade dominated with a four-length romp in the GI Arkansas Derby.“To win both of those races was exciting and now those two horses are right at the top of the favorites,” said Taylor. “It's pretty crazy. Both of those mares were good race mares and very good mares physically. They have good pedigrees, so they didn't have any chinks in their armor. They were solid mares, got bred to the top horses and we got good results.” Wathnan Racing's Commandment is the fourth foal out of Grade I winner Sippican Harbor. The daughter of Orb raced to victory in the 2018 GI Spinaway Stakes for Lee Pokoik and joined the longtime owner and breeder's broodmare band after going through the ring unsold at $1.45 million.“Commandment was a very nice foal,” said Taylor. “He was very blocky, strong and fast-looking. He was just solid, with a lot of bone and substance.”The son of Into Mischief RNA'd at just under $500,000 as a weanling and again as a Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling before bringing that same figure in September.“I was hoping for a little more,” Taylor admitted, but added that there will be plenty more opportunities for the family at the sales in the near future.“Sippican Harbor has a McKinzie foal by her side and an Elite Power yearling filly,” he noted. “There was a daughter of hers by Curlin, Hanavave, bought by Robert and Lawana Low that is gorgeous. She didn't ever do anything on the track, but she is in foal to Not This Time so that's exciting.”Of Sippican Harbor's McKinzie colt that was foaled April 3, Taylor said they have particularly high hopes for the youngster. Sippican Harbor and her colt foaled April 3 | Sara Gordon“I really think he might be the best physical that the mare has ever had,” he noted. “The mare tends to throw a little bit short-legged. She's stocky, so she throws herself, but this McKinzie has a lot of leg and stretch to him.”Sippican Harbor will return to Into Mischief this year.Robert and Lawana Low purchased Spice Is Nice (Curlin) for $1.05 million at the 2018 Keeneland September Sale. Bred by Bobby Flay out of his Grade I winner Dame Dorothy (Bernardini), the regally bred filly was a 'TDN Rising Star presented by Hagyard,' placed second in the 2020 GII Davona Dale in her next start, and won the GIII Allaire DuPont Distaff the following year. She was bred to Into Mischief in her first year at stud and the resulting foal was Renegade.“Renegade was here as a foal and then he went back to the Lows' farm in Missouri for a while,” explained Taylor. “He was always a very nice foal. He had a little more stretch to him than Commandment. It was a great combination between Into Mischief and the mare.”As a yearling, Renegade was bought by Repole Stable for $975,000, with his breeders staying in as partners. This year Spice Is Nice has a colt by Not This Time, foaled February 24, that Taylor said is “absolutely gorgeous.”“He's a big, stretchy foal,” he reported. “He's one of the better foals on the farm so we think he's something special.”Spice Is Nice was bred back to Taylor Made's star sire, who currently sits atop the list of leading sires this year by earnings.Taylor Made also foaled and raised Repole Stable's GI Kentucky Oaks contender Zany (American Pharoah). The winner of the Suncoast Stakes and runner-up in the GI Ashland was a $350,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling. Last November, her dam Mo' Green (Uncle Mo) sold to Repole Stable for $550,000.“It's really exciting and rewarding,” said Taylor. “It's going to be an exciting Derby week.”The post All In the Family with Taylor Made’s Derby Double Threat appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
