Victor Wembanyama’s status for the next few playoff games is up in the air. Just 24 hours after being named the NBA’s unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, the San Antonio Spurs star was hoping to lead his team to a 2-0 series lead against the Portland Trail Blazers in the first-round of the 2025-26 playoffs. Wembanyama exited Game 2 against the Blazers in the second quarter after suffering a head injuryGettyBut with 8:57 remaining in the second quarter of Tuesday night’s contest, of the Spurs’ 106-103 defeat, the French phenom suffered a hard fall in which his head hit the hardwood. The injury came about after Wembanyama was fouled by Blazers veteran guard Jrue Holiday, and was unable to brace his fall after he became unbalanced, seeing him tumble face-down onto the court. He remained on the deck for 30-or-so seconds before sitting up and speaking with teammate Stephon Castle, before a timeout was called by Spurs coach Mitch Johnson.After heading into the locker room, the 7-foot-4 star was subsequently ruled out of the rest of Game 2 after the Spurs placed him on concussion protocol. He exited the game having recorded five points, four rebounds, one assist and a block. “I just know he has a concussion and he’s in the protocol,” Johnson said postgame. “We’ll obviously take the proper and appropriate steps.”Under the NBA’s concussion protocol guidelines, a player in concussion protocol cannot return to full participation for 48 hours. He must then meet several benchmarks, while being symptom-free, before being cleared to play by medical staff. This includes neurological testing and final clearance from the team doctor with the league’s concussion protocol director. With Wembanyama out of the game, the Blazers were able to erase the Spurs’ 14-point lead in the fourth quarter after San Antonio’s offense stalled. Scoot Henderson recorded a team-high 31 points, while Holiday tallied 16 and breakout star Deni Avdija tacked on an additional 14 points. More awards could be coming for WembanyamaThe 2025-26 campaign has been a dominant one for Wembanyama. In 64 regular season games, the 22-year-old averaged a 25 points per game shooting at a 51.2 percent clip and 11.5 rebounds – all career-highs – while he added 3.1 assists, 1.0 steal and 3.1 blocks. Having become the NBA’s first unanimous DPOY since the award’s inception in 1982-83 after earning all 100 first-place votes, Wembanyama could yet add to his tally as he is also a finalist for the coveted Most Valuable Player award. Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and three-time winner Nikola Jokic are the other two finalists in contention for the award. Back in March, though, the Spurs star made a public plea as to why he felt he deserved to be named the recipient of the award over his competitors.
