English former Premier League player now playing for MLS club granted US green card

Rob Holding has been granted a US green card just eight months after moving to the MLS.The former England Under-21 international joined Colorado Rapids in August on a deal until the end of 2026.Holding has been granted a US green card eight months after signing for ColoradoGettyColorado have now confirmed that Holding has been designated as a lawful permanent resident of the USA.His green card status is effective immediately and means Holding will now be classed as a domestic player in the MLS.Colorado Rapids statementAnnouncing the news in a statement, the Rapids said: “Colorado Rapids defender Rob Holding has been granted a U.S. Green Card and will be classified as a domestic player on the club’s roster effectively immediately.”The club added: “Obtaining a Green Card designates an individual as a lawful permanent resident of the United States.“Under Major League Soccer roster rules, Holding will now be classified as a domestic player, providing the Rapids with additional roster flexibility given the limited number of international roster slots allotted to each club.“With this designation, Holding will no longer occupy an international roster slot for the Rapids.”The 30-year-old moved to MLS after spending his entire senior career in England.Holding made 98 Premier League appearances for Arsenal having joined the Gunners from Bolton aged 20.Since leaving the club in 2023, he has had spells with both Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.Meanwhile, Holding has appeared 16 times across all competitions for Colorado.Holding is now classed as a domestic player for Colorado in the MLSGettyRapids eye cup gloryHis current club are next in action on Wednesday against Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the last 16 of the US Open Cup.Colorado have yet to win the competition in their 30-year history having been founded in 1995.Their best performance came in 1999 as the club reached the final, only to lose to Rochester Raging Rhinos.This season represents their first appearance since 2023 after not entering in each of the previous two campaigns.The Rapids return to league action away to Houston Dynamo on Saturday having been beaten by Vancouver Whitecaps last time out.They are currently seventh in the MLS Western Conference after 10 matches this season.Holding has made 16 appearances since joining the Rapids in AugustGettyIt follows an 11th place finish last season as the club missed out on the MLS Cup play-offs despite Holding’s mid-season arrival.Matt Wells’ side are one-time winners, lifting the title for the only time in 2010.
