KM Malta Airlines has confirmed it will not be impacted by Lufthansa’s massive wave of cancelled flights, even as global jet fuel concerns continue to grow.In comments to Times of Malta, the national airline said it has not cancelled any flights and is continuing to operate normally to German cities including Munich, Berlin and Düsseldorf. This comes after Lufthansa announced it is cutting around 20,000 flights through to October in a bid to save fuel, with prices reportedly doubling following the Iran conflict. The move is expected to save the airline around 40,000 tonnes of jet fuel.Fuel supply fears have been mounting globally after tensions escalated in the Middle East, with disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for about one-fifth of the world’s oil. While Malta’s fuel supply remains stable for now, concerns are still being raised locally.KM Malta Airlines chairman David Curmi warned that shortages abroad could still impact operations.“It’s a real concern,” he said. “Even if we don’t have a problem here, if there’s a shortage on the other end, we still can’t operate as usual.”Meanwhile, Ryanair subsidiary Malta Air said it currently has enough fuel to cover operations for the next six weeks. The warning signs are already showing across Europe, with Wizz Air recently experiencing fuel shortages at multiple airports in Italy. The International Energy Agency has also cautioned that Europe may only have around six weeks’ worth of jet fuel left. For now, flights to and from Malta remain unaffected, but the situation is being closely watched.•
