Alex Borg continued outlining his healthcare vision with a series of new proposals focused on mental health services, better working conditions for healthcare staff and stronger patient support.Among the headline announcements was a pledge to shut down Mount Carmel Hospital and replace it with new modern mental health centres, bringing care closer to communities and improving standards for patients.Borg also said workers across the health sector, including doctors, nurses and healthcare staff, would be given greater respect and improved conditions, with commitments on better salaries, stronger career paths, training and working conditions.Another major pledge was that all cancer medicines prescribed by consultants would be given free of charge to Maltese citizens, describing medicine as a right that should be supported by the state during people’s hardest moments. The wider plan also includes expanding rehabilitation and intermediate care services outside acute hospitals, helping patients recover in the right setting while freeing up hospital beds for those who need intensive treatment.Mental health care within the community was another key focus, with proposals for modern facilities and support services in schools.Borg also announced plans for one unified digital medical record system and a “digital front door” for health services, making it easier for patients to access care.Primary health centres would also be strengthened to offer urgent care, diagnostics and minor procedures in one place, with extended opening hours. The proposals form part of a broader push by Partit Nazzjonalista to reform healthcare and reduce pressure on Malta’s hospitals ahead of the 30th May general election.•
