Nuno expects West Ham's relegation battle to go down to the wire

Wait 5 sec.

Nuno Espirito Santo insisted West Ham must keep fighting and keep believing in their quest to stay in the Premier League given the closeness of the battle at the bottom. West Ham left it late to ensure they stayed out of the bottom three with a 2-1 over Everton at London Stadium last time out, with Callum Wilson scoring a stoppage-time winner. The Hammers are two points above 18th-placed Tottenham with four league games remaining, the first of which comes against Brentford on Saturday. Nuno's side are assigned a 47.8% chance of staying in the top flight by the Opta supercomputer, while Spurs' hopes are rated at 32.7%, and the West Ham boss urged his players to build on that win over Everton. "We knew it was going to be tough until the end. It was important we keep believing, fighting until the last minute," Nuno told BBC Sport."That is something we have in our character and that is positive for us. It is going to be until the end – keep fighting, keep believing. Tough one, but we are on our path."Tomas Soucek, who was also on target against the Toffees, echoed Nuno's thoughts, but says West Ham's recent run of form has instilled confidence among the group. "It's been a lot better. Obviously, we've been a bit disappointed with a few games, but we're in a better place now, and we have to keep it going and manage it," Soucek added."We need to keep enjoying our football, getting results, and we know that, as it stands, things are in our hands. We have four games left, and as everyone says, it's four finals."But, we just have to take each one as it comes."Brentford, meanwhile, saw their European hopes take a dent after they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford. But the Bees had their chances in the contest, with Igor Thiago's three missed opportunities in the first half ruthlessly punished by Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko. Mathias Jensen scored an 87th-minute consolation for Brentford, who ended the match with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.17 from their 12 shots, four of which were on target, compared to United's 1.36 from their 11 attempts. While Andrews was left disappointed with the result, he believes there were plenty of positives to take from the display heading into their final four league games of the season."Bitterly disappointed. Overall, our performance was very good," Andrews said. "As a collective, we went toe-to-toe with a good side and controlled large parts of the game."The second goal was a bitter one to swallow. I have to say the attitude of the group was really impressive."PLAYERS TO WATCHBrentford – Igor ThiagoOf Thiago's 21 Premier League goals this season, only one has been in a London derby – his shot conversion rate in London derbies is 5% (one goal from 21 shots), compared to 36% against non-London teams (20 goals from 55 shots). But he will be hoping for a better outing than he had at Old Trafford. He had four shots, none of which were on target, while also missing one big chance as defined by Opta.West Ham – Jarrod BowenBowen is just two assists away from being the first West Ham player to register 50 in the Premier League after producing two against Everton last time out.The England international has assisted seven goals in his last seven games, while only Bruno Fernandes (19) has more than Bowen overall in the competition this season (10).MATCH PREDICTION: BRENTFORD WINBrentford have won three of their four Premier League home games against West Ham, with the only exception being a 1-1 draw last season. However, the Bees are winless in their last six league home games (D4 L2), with each of the last three finishing level. They last drew four consecutive home league games between March and April 2021 in the Championship. In addition, Brentford have won just two of their last 15 Premier League London derby matches (D6 L7), though both of these victories came against West Ham. At home, the Bees are winless in nine such matches (D6 L3) since a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in August 2024.West Ham, meanwhile, have lost seven of their nine top-flight games against Brentford (W1 D1), their highest loss rate against any side they have faced 5+ times in the competition (78%).But their upturn in form has seen them earn 22 points from their last 13 Premier League games (W6 D4 L3) and are two points clear of the relegation zone – at the start of this run, they were seven points from safety.Nuno's side have also enjoyed recent success against teams from the capital. The Hammers have won two of their last four derbies in the league (D1 L1), earning as many points in these four games as they did in their previous 14 combined (seven).OPTA WIN PROBABILITYBrentford – 54.3%Draw – 23.5%West Ham – 22.2%
