Local bodies in Kerala granted permission for taking up urgent projects - The HinduPublished - April 29, 2026 07:26 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAMWith the Model Code of Conduct for the Assembly elections still in force, local bodies in the State have been accorded special permission to take up urgent projects and to go ahead with tendering for works related to pre-monsoon cleaning, maintenance of schools and other projects. The long window of Model Code of Conduct had made it difficult for local bodies to initiate major works, especially for pre-monsoon cleaning.Most of the local bodies have prepared their annual plans for the 2026-27 financial year and got it approved by the District Planning Committee. However, as the Model Code of Conduct is in force, the local bodies are unable to get approval for the new projects from the vetting officer or begin implementation. The Local Self-Governments department decided to grant permission to the local bodies to take up some works considering their urgency and the fact that the elections are over in the State.Published - April 29, 2026 07:26 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
