At least eight MPs elected in 2022 will not be contesting their parliamentary seats again according to Times of Malta.Prime Minister Robert Abela officially dissolved parliament on 27th April ahead of an early election set for 30th May.While both the Nationalist Party and Labour Party are still finalising their candidate lists, six PN MPs and two former Labour ministers will not be seeking to retain their seats in parliament.Ivan J BartoloBusinessman Ivan J Bartolo was the first sitting MP to announce in March 2025 that he would not seek re-election.Bartolo was first elected to parliament in 2020 through a casual election but later gave up his seat shortly after to make space for then PN leader Bernard Grech.He was re-elected in 2022 and served as a regular spokesman on the economy and digital affairs.Claudette ButtigiegFormer Eurovision singer Claudette Buttigieg will sit out her first general election since entering parliament in 2013 on her first attempt.In the last election, Buttigieg struggled to retain her seat but entered parliament through the gender-quota mechanism, which awards extra seats to women.Last year, she said she would refuse to be elected again through the mechanism, saying women were being treated as a symbolic gesture of equality.Ryan CallusEngineer Ryan Callus joined the PN team after the 2013 election and held several shadow portfolios including planning, lands, environment and energy.In a Facebook post last year, he said he had taken the “difficult” decision not to contest the next election to spend more time with his young family.Robert CutajarPN Party veteran Robert Cutajar, part of the 2013 cohort, is also stepping down.He served as Opposition whip during the last legislature and previously held the role of Mellieħa mayor before entering parliament.Chris SaidFormer justice minister Chris Said will vacate his seat after 21 years in parliament.The Gozitan MP previously ran for the PN leadership in 2017, losing to Adrian Delia.He also served as Nadur mayor for 10 years and is a former PN secretary general.Karol AquilinaKarol Aquilina will end his nine-year run in parliament after deciding not to contest the next election.Although no formal announcement has been made, he has been informing constituents of his decision.He was prominently involved in the push for justice following journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia’s 2017 assassination.Clayton BartoloFormer tourism minister Clayton Bartolo was preparing to contest the next election but withdrew on 24th April, citing concerns over a future smear campaign against him and his wife.Bartolo resigned as minister in November 2024 and was removed from the Labour parliamentary group.He was first elected in 2017 and appointed to cabinet in 2020 by Robert Abela.Roderick GaldesFormer housing minister Roderick Galdes, a parliamentary veteran of 22 years, had his path to re-election blocked by his party on the same day the May election was announced.Galdes was first appointed to cabinet in 2013 as parliamentary secretary for fisheries.What do you make of this?•
