Light magnitude 3.9 earthquake at 183 km depth24 Apr 01:07 UTC: First to report: IRIS after 5 minutes.24 Apr 01:07: Now using data updates from EMSC24 Apr 01:07: Now using data updates from USGSUpdate Fri, 24 Apr 2026, 01:09Small 3.9 quake hits near False Pass, Aleutians East, Alaska, USAAn earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred only 7 minutes ago 52 miles southwest of False Pass, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 113 miles beneath the epicenter near False Pass, Aleutians East, Alaska, USA, early afternoon on Thursday, April 23rd, 2026, at 2:01 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9 as well. A third agency, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In False Pass (pop. 40, 52 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeApr 24, 2026 01:01:51 UTC - Local time at epicenterThursday, Apr 23, 2026, at 04:01 pm (GMT -9)StatusconfirmedMagnitude3.90Depth183 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude54.137°N / 163.837°WAleutians East Borough, Alaska, United StatesSeismic antipode54.137°S / 16.163°EQuality72 seismic stationsShaking intensityNot feltPrimary data sourceUSGS (United States Geological Survey)Nearest volcanoWestdahl (68 km / 42 mi)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeBroken Clouds 3.5°C (38 F), humidity: 94%, wind: 6 m/s (11 kts) from SEstimated seismic energy released4.5 x 1010 joules (12.4 megawatt hours, equivalent to 10.7 tons of TNT) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 3.9 | about seismic energy25 minutes agoApr 24, 2026 01:01 GMT / Apr 23, 2026 04:01 pm (GMT -9)Lat / Lng: 54.137 / -163.837: 84 km SSW of False Pass, AlaskaSource: USGSOther sources: IRIS: 3.9 / 183 km, EMSC: 4.8 / 183 kmDetail info | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-22938873',54.13700,-163.83700,'25 minutes ago: Mag. 3.9, 84 km SSW of False Pass, Alaska',html,'quakes-5-24.png',18,18,9,9,124]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="¬Felt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Ground shaking from this quakeMap of estimated ground shaking (source:USGS)Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in the US AlaskaNearby placesThe closest larger town near the epicenter is False Pass, a town with 40 inhabitants in the United States, in 84 km (52 mi) distance to the north, but it is unlikely that the quake was felt there.
