They are deliberate searches for liquidity above and below. "Where is price accepted?" "Where is price rejected?" To that end they test the extremes. Purpose of Sweeps "I don't know where value is. Therefore, I must test liquidity pools until I find the boundaries of acceptance." Sweeps = Value Discovery Hinge = Compression of Value Discovery Apex = Center of Value Discovery Daily Session (04/22, 18.00 - 04/23, 17.00) 468-point hinge The apex is still sharpening. The auction is still balancing. EOD apex = 26965 - the declared center of value for this entire day of trading This is the kind of hinge that when it does break leads to a multi-hundred-point move. VWAP + Apex + micro-balance are stacked. This is the declared heartbeat of this entire day's trading. The auction says, "Neither buyers nor sellers showed initiative to break this hinge. Therefore, I am storing energy for when one side or the other initiates a move out of this hinge." A much larger multi-day hinge can be drawn. Tomorrow I will draw whatever hinge forms from 04/23 18.00 - 04/24 09.30. I am too busy annotating my charts and sharpening them for the NY open 09.30 NY time. To find the hinge lip and floor I use a 1-minute chart for accuracy - sometimes I use a 15-second chart. I use the 2nd highest/lowest. This eliminates the sweep's wick and gives greater accuracy. I left much data on this chart so you can see the interactions of data points. The light red shaded area is an impulse base that launched a 400-point expansion. There are several apexes running through it. Broadly speaking NY RTH has three sweep windows - 09:30 - 10.15, 11:45 -13:15 and 15:30 - 16:00. Summary Sweeps are NOT random volatility. They are deliberate attempts to discover upper and lower value boundaries. Once those boundaries are discovered the auction compresses price between them forming a hinge - a coil of stored energy, a tensioned spring. The apex is the Value Center of the entire sweep cycle. At some time one side will initiate the next move. You will see it as an impulse bar.
