Chris Agius will not be contesting the upcoming general election, bringing an end to a 30-year parliamentary career Times of Malta reported.Widely known as il-Wefi, Agius has been a constant presence on Labour’s benches since first being elected in 1996, going on to win seven consecutive elections.During his time in government, he served for eight years as a junior minister, holding roles in research, innovation, sport, planning and lands.Although he moved to the backbench in 2022, Agius remained a popular figure, particularly in Cottonera, where he built a strong connection with constituents.Now 64, he said the decision to step away was always part of the plan, with the aim of making space for younger politicians and spending more time with his family.Agius added that he still intends to contribute to the party in a less prominent role.•
