Prime Minister Robert Abela announced a series of pension-related measures aimed at improving entitlements and providing greater flexibility for couples and widows. One of the proposals put forward by the Labour Party is that should it be elected, it would be possible for a couple to transfer up to five years of additional paid contributions between them, so that the partner who does not have enough contributions can qualify for the minimum pension.According to the proposal, those who have already paid the difference will still be able to transfer the extra contributions and improve their pension. In 2027, the reform to the widows’ pension will come to an end, so that from next year widows will begin receiving the full pension of their deceased spouse.Widows who were entitled to their own pension but lost it when they became widowed in order to receive the widows’ pension will see their pension increased by 20% as compensation for the pension they lost should Labour be elected. What do you make of this proposal?•
