Ka Ying Still ‘Rising’, Sets Another Record In Chairman’s Sprint Prize

Wait 5 sec.

After vowing earlier this week that Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) would not be chasing any more track records in defence of his title in the HK$24-million G1 Chairman's Sprint Prize, jockey Zac Purton will be only too happy to have been proven wrong. That's because the 5-year-old wunder-sprinter made the 1200-metre contest his 20th straight success, lowering his own mark by 0.02 and sweeping the Hong Kong Sprint Series for the second straight season. It has been just short of 500 days since Ka Ying Rising was last defeated in a race–Dec. 12, 2024 to be precise–and there was no reason to believe that streak was going to be stopped Sunday, even with the presence of Japan's top short-tracker in the form of Satono Reve, whose own sire Lord Kanaloa lit up the Sha Tin turf on two occasions. For the eighth consecutive time locally, Ka Ying Rising jumped at statutory minimum odds ($1.05) to build on his victory in the G2 Sprint Cup Apr. 6, when he stopped the clock in 1:07.12. After another Sunday tour-de-force, he now owns five of the six quickest times ever registered over the metric six furlongs at Sha Tin.Not the quickest away, Ka Ying Rising was settled in third position by Purton and was poised to come after the top two as they neared the entrance to the straight. He served it up to the pacesetters three off the inside and when Purton hit the gas in earnest about 300m out, the race was all but over, as he lengthened effortlessly clear under soft riding. Two-time G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen hero and G1 QE II Jubilee Stakes runner-up Satono Reve, at 89-1 the chief market 'rival', ran on nicely enough to reprise his runner-up effort from 2025. Raging Blizzard (Per Incanto) was best of the rest in third. The prevailing quick underfoot conditions at Sha Tin routinely lead to some eye-catching come-home times, but even taking that into consideration, Ka Ying Rising was utterly sensational on Sunday. He covered his final 800 metres in a scarcely believable :42.94, his final 400 in :21.52, and it can be argued he was not fully extended to do so.“It was pretty painless,” Purton said. “His speed was nice, he was in a good rhythm, and it was just a matter of him turning up and doing what he has all season, and he did that.“It was nice to break the track record again, albeit just slightly. When I let him go he quickened, but he did take a couple of strides to balance up a little, but once he quickened, he quickened extremely well and a long way out he felt very comfortable and very confident.”Trainer David Hayes has heretofore resisted comparisons with some of the best to grace the turf anywhere in the world, but he is slowly coming around.“You tend to worry that you are going to let everyone down,” Hayes said. “He doesn't, does he? In the Year of the Horse, he is now one of the all-time greats, I think. The way he is running times and rating so incredibly well.“A long time ago I thought he might have been the best horse I trained, and about a year ago I thought he was definitely the best horse I trained, and now I think he is one of the best horses I have ever seen.”Another perfect–and likely Horse of the Year–preparation completed, Ka Ying Rising is set for some down time at the HKJC's Conghua Training Center in mainland China before revving back up for another crack at the A$20-million G1 The Everest in October. At Conghua, he will join his stablemate and 4-year-old half-brother Ka Ying Glory (Turn Me Loose), who is placed once from seven starts in Hong Kong for Hayes.   Sunday, Sha Tin, Hong KongCHAIRMAN'S SPRINT PRIZE-G1, HK$24,000,000 (£2,269,920/€2,620,800/US$3,064,800), Sha Tin, 4-26, 3yo/up, 1200mT, 1:07.10 (NCR), gd/fm.1–KA YING RISING (NZ), 126, g, 5, by Shamexpress (NZ)1st Dam: Missy Moo (NZ), by Per Incanto2nd Dam: Royal Rhythm (NZ), by Rhythm3rd Dam: Her Dynasty (NZ), by Sir Tristram (Ire)O-Ka Ying Syndicate; B-Grandmoral Lodge Racing; T-David Hayes; J-Zac Purton; HK$13,440,000.
