My Wish Makes Group 1 Breakthrough in Champions Mile for Red-Hot Newnham

Trainer Mark Newnham celebrated a Group 1 breakthrough in Hong Kong on Sunday as stable star My Wish (Flying Artie) ran out a determined winner of the HK$24-million FWD Champions Mile.Breaking from stall 10, My Wish eased to the tail of the field as Copartner Prance (Epaulette) dictated the early gallop ahead of defending champion Red Lion (Belardo). Turning for home, fan favourite Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) made his move in search of a seventh career victory at the top level, while jockey Hugh Bowman angled My Wish into the clear. As the pacesetters faded and Voyage Bubble was found wanting for a turn of speed, My Wish quickly seized control to lead the 14 runners into the final furlong. A persistent challenger soon emerged in old nemesis Cap Ferrat (Snitzel), but My Wish was always doing enough to get the verdict by a neck. British raider Docklands (Massaat) ran a cracker in third for Harry Eustace, half-a-length further behind Cap Ferrat, while Invincible Ibis (Hellbent) was another from the Newnham stable to excel himself in fourth.Invincible Ibis had been a poignant winner of last month's HK$26-million BMW Hong Kong Derby for Newnham, mainly because the trainer suffered heartbreak when sending out My Wish to finish a short-head second to Cap Ferrat in the 2025 Derby. Like Invincible Ibis, My Wish went from the final leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series to finish fourth in this race as a four-year-old.“It couldn't be going any better, really,” Newnham said of his recent success. “We were fairly confident with the horse, at least as much as you can be going into a Group 1 race.“His work here last Saturday morning [April 18] was exceptional. I was just sitting in the grandstand and he came flying by. Hugh's a man of few words, generally, when he's hopped off one after galloping them, but I could just tell in his voice that it was as good as the horse could go. We knew then that if things worked out during the race that his turn of foot would be superior at the end – and it has been.”He added, “I was proud of both horses. Invincible Ibis, when he comes back next season, he's going to acquit himself well in this grade. My Wish has taken a season and a bit to win his Group 1 but, the way he's going now, I don't think that we've seen the last of it.”This victory was the second for Bowman in the Champions Mile, after that of Red Lion last year, and the Australian was proud to unite with his compatriot on FWD Champions Day.Bowman said: “The results speak for themselves. I'm not one of his most used jockeys but, fortunately, he seems to find me when he's got the better horses. What a fantastic job he's doing, not only with the elite animals, but all of the horses in his stable. It's a pleasure to work with him and for him – long may it continue.“I'm very proud of the horse. I was very confident going into the race. The pace was really quite on, which suited him, and I got a smooth passage through. When I asked for a top effort, he gave it to me in a stride.”The post My Wish Makes Group 1 Breakthrough in Champions Mile for Red-Hot Newnham appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
