PN Criticises Labour Light Rail Plan And Pushes For Transport Reform

The Nationalist Party(PN) has criticised Labour’s newly announced 24-kilometre light rail project, stating that a PN electoral victory is the only realistic way to achieve meaningful transport reform within a single parliamentary term.Yesterday, the government unveiled plans for a rail line connecting St Paul’s Bay to the airport, to be implemented over three legislatures.Transport Minister Chris Bonett confirmed that initial coring tests are set to begin as early as next week, while Finance Minister Clyde Caruana acknowledged that the project’s figures will need revision and warned about the financial risks associated with a scheme of this scale.Through shadow ministers Toni Bezzina, Bernard Grech, and Ivan Castillo, the PN argued that taxpayers are funding consultancy studies with limited tangible results. The party also noted that Labour first proposed an underground metro system in 2021, and criticised the absence of clear cost breakdowns for that original plan. The opposition has stated that, within the first 100 days of a Nationalist government led by Alex Borg, it would launch an implementation framework for mass transport, with the first line expected to be completed before the end of that legislature. What do you make of this?Credit: @maltainmotion via Instagram•
