Justin Fields opens up on Patrick Mahomes’ role in rebuilding Chiefs QB’s confidence

Wait 5 sec.

Justin Fields already appears to be very comfortable in Kansas City. The former first-round NFL Draft pick arrived to the Chiefs in a trade from the New York Jets at the start of the 2026 off-season where he will now team up with Patrick Mahomes in the quarterback room. Justin Fields is grateful to be with the ChiefsGettyStill just 27-years-old, Fields has no better opportunity anywhere else in the NFL to learn than from that of two-time league MVP Mahomes – who has already made his feelings on his new teammate known – and serial Super Bowl-winning head coach Andy Reid. “I wanted to come here because of the [Chiefs’] culture, because of Pat and to learn from him and Coach Reid,” Fields said, via ESPN’s Nate Taylor. “Just the winning, to be honest.“We of course knew of each other, but we really didn’t communicate before coming here. I’m excited to learn from [Mahomes]. “I’m already kind of picking his brain a little bit and just observing how he goes about things in the meeting rooms, field and stuff like that. “I’m excited, of course, to work with Coach Reid and [offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy] and all the guys on offense.”After a torrid year in the Big Apple, where he was benched for veteran backup Tyrod Taylor after a 2-8 start, Fields has joined the Chiefs with a renewed sense of optimism and new lease of life that he can get his career back on track.“I was excited for a new start, the tradition here, the culture here,” Fields continued. “Regardless of me starting or being a backup, I’m going to attack [each day] the same way. My goal is to get better, any way I can. My mindset doesn’t change.”Although Fields is still only getting accustomed to a new team, new scheme and new playbook, the signal caller has already positively called out the team for how they handle business in preparation for a new season. “Just having that culture — similar to when I was in Pittsburgh — just that winning mindset,” Fields said of being in the Chiefs’ training facility. “Even me being here for two days, you can tell why that happens, just the mindset of the coaches and players. The fact that 99% of the guys are here right now just shows you what kind of a team we’re going to be this year.”Fields may need to accept a new role in KC once Mahomes returns back to the starting lineupGettyAndy Reid has been full of high praise for his new QBGettyAndy Reid ‘confident’ Fields can execute his roleFor the first time in his career, Fields has joined a team where he is not expected to be the outright starter – an argument could be made that he joined the Steelers to be a backup to Russell Wilson, though Wilson would up being injured to start the 2024 campaign. But that doesn’t mean that Fields won’t see the field at all in the iconic red and yellow uniform. In fact, he has an opportunity to become the first ever NFL QB to record four consecutive Week 1 starts for four different teams. This is because Mahomes’ status for the Chiefs’ season opener is currently in doubt as he continues to recover from a torn ACL and LCL injury he suffered in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers. As such, Reid could deploy Fields into the starting lineup to begin the new season – something he already has huge confidence in. “I appreciate Justin and the way he has gone about everything so far,” Coach Reid said Monday. “He’s been great with everything. “He’s a legitimate quarterback, a starting quarterback in the NFL, and we’re lucky enough to have him here. “If that’s the role that he plays early in the season, we have full confidence that he can do a great job with that.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the news, exclusives, interviews and more.
