Liam Browne, perhaps best known for masterminding the career of the Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Dara Monarch, has died at the age of 89.Having been bought for just 5,000gns, Dara Monarch developed into one of the leading three-year-olds of the 1982 season, with his other wins including the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot when it was run as a Group 2. The following year, Browne went in search of further Classic glory with Carlingford Castle, who ran a stormer when filling the runner-up spot behind Teenoso in the Derby at Epsom.Browne also enjoyed his fair share of success over jumps, notably at the Cheltenham Festival, where Mr Kildare won the 1978 Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle and Slaney Idol struck in the 1980 Supreme Novices' Hurdle. Before embarking on a training career at Maddenstown Lodge on the Curragh, Browne was a talented jockey whose significant triumphs included the 1958 Pretty Polly Stakes aboard Owenello. That year also saw him crowned Ireland's champion apprentice for the third consecutive season. That experience stood him in good stead in later life when he became renowned for his education of young riders making their way in the sport, with familiar names such as Mick Kinane, Jamie Spencer and Tommy Carmody featuring among those to have been taken under his wing. Kinane, for example, was still a few weeks shy of his 23rd birthday when guiding the aforementioned Dara Monarch to victory in the Irish Guineas.Browne, who is survived by five children, will repose at Rigney's Funeral Home, Athy (R14 TX26) on Monday, April 27, from 6pm until the conclusion of the Rosary at 8pm. Removal will take place on Tuesday, April 28 to arrive at the Carmelite Church, Kildare Town for Requiem Mass at 12 noon.
