Chelsea rushed into Liam Rosenior appointment to fend off other Premier League clubs

Wait 5 sec.

Chelsea made Liam Rosenior their manager ‘too quickly’ amid interest from other Premier League clubs. That is how former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan reads the situation after Rosenior was axed by the Blues after just 106 days in charge.Rosenior walks away with a pay-off in the region of £4m after just 106 days in chargeGettyThe 41-year-old was lifted out of Strasbourg, a fellow BlueCo owned club, and parachuted into the Chelsea job after Enzo Maresca was fired.Rosenior, who had previously been sacked by Championship side Hull City, was earning plenty of plaudits for the work he was doing in Ligue 1.Despite signing a six-and-a-half year contract, his reign was abruptly cut short following a dismal run of form.Chelsea had lost five straight games without scoring a goal, while concerning reports have emerged of his lack of backing in the dressing room.talkSPORT understands that he was even handed the nickname the ‘substitute teacher’ by one senior player.Speaking on White and Jordan, former Palace owner Jordan said: “They had a situation with Liam Rosenior, where I think that they were indicating to Liam that at some point he was going to get the Chelsea job if he kept on developing the way he developed. I think it came too fast. “I think there were also other clubs that were interested in Liam at that particular time and they took a decision, if we don’t give him the Premier League club, if we don’t give him the job now, he may go to another Premier League club.“And we’ll take the risk that actually what we’ve seen is good enough to take us forward.”He added: “Have I ever suggested that I thought it was a brilliant decision to put Liam Rosenior in? I’ve always said I liked him. I always felt that he had a lot to learn, and he was going to learn on Chelsea’s dime.“Unfortunately, for Chelsea’s ownership, what they’ve done now is they’re not winning on any front. They’re not winning in the way they communicate with the fans. They’re not winning with the fans full stop. They’re not winning on the field. The Chelsea squad did not buy into Rosenior methods – leading to his downfallGetty“And they’re not winning with the appointments and they need to fix it.”talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook then added on the other Premier League interest: “But they believed that it would be Premier League clubs like Crystal Palace or Fulham, not Manchester United or Manchester City.”What next for Liam Rosenior?Rosenior walks away with a pay-off of around £4m due to a break clause in his contract, not the £24m that has been reported.Jordan added: “I mean the reality of it for Liam is he is now in people’s minds a person that communicates in a certain way, which is not particularly good. “He’s somebody that’s been over promoted and I think he’ll suffer as a result of it.”Will Chelsea’s owners get it right?Calum McFarlane has been put in charge until the end of the season, when a permanent appointment will be made. How Liam Rosenior’s stats compare to the worst Premier League managers this seasonAndoni Iraola is among the leading candidates for the job, but no approach has been made at this stage.BlueCo are already facing huge criticism from fans after £1.4bn spent in the transfer market and things are going wrong both on and off the pitch.Jordan added: “Other sides are still far more advanced than Chelsea are at this moment in time so Chelsea just can’t rock in and spend their way to success. “I think they’ve made bad decisions. I don’t think losing Tuchel was a bad decision because they had no choice with his behaviour.“I think the Potter decision was a bad decision. You can put that down to inexperience. I think bringing Frank Lampard in a second time around to bridge the gap between when they got rid of Potter was a bad decision and they’ve made a few of them.“Have they got anything right? Well, name me something that they’ve got right. I think the vision of Maresca was right.“They gave Maresca a chance. People won’t want to hear this, they’ll think it’s me giving an excuse to an owner; the worst thing that could ever happen to Maresca was winning the World Club Championship because all of a sudden he went up 50 leagues in his own mind rather than be the manager that was coming out of Leicester accepting this huge opportunity at Chelsea, understanding the parameters he was working within. “A year later, he didn’t want to work within those parameters because he’d achieved some modicum of success. Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly have come under fire for their running of ChelseaGetty“So I think they got it right with Maresca but the end result was he’s an immature manager that got success at Chelsea too quickly and it went to his head.“Now people will say that’s me defending the ownership and I’m sure that I’ll get plenty of people criticising me for my take. “But there’s a contrasting view to everything in the public domain. Whilst I think they’ve made lots of mistakes, I think now after four years that’s enough now you’ve had your learning curve. “You’ve impressed your will upon the football club. You’ve decided to buy young players. You now need to look at what’s out there, what the conventional wisdom tells you, and go right.“Senior players, established winning manager, step off the gas in terms of your involvement and let it run right.”
