The Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government, through the Lands Authority, has officially launched a new scheme aimed at reducing the annual rent payable by Voluntary Organisations and Trade Unions operating from Government property administered by the same Authority. This initiative reflects the Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting organisations that make a valuable contribution to Maltese society. The scheme establishes a new structure of fairer and more sustainable rates based on the size of the property occupied. This will lead to a significant reduction in the financial burden on these entities, which often operate with limited resources but deliver substantial social impact. The Minister responsible for Culture, Lands and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, stated that this scheme is further proof of a Government that truly believes in the value of voluntary and representative work.Minister Bonnici said that voluntary organisations and trade unions are fundamental pillars of our society. He explained how they give a voice to those who lack one, provide essential services and strengthen our communities. He added that this scheme is not merely a financial measure, but a clear statement of intent to continue investing in these voluntary and industrial organisations, providing them with the tools to grow and to continue making a positive difference in people’s lives.Dr Bonnici noted that such initiatives are possible thanks to the country’s strong economy, which enables the Government not only to maintain financial stability but also to invest directly in society. He stated that Malta’s robust and sustainable economic growth is being felt tangibly through measures such as this, where the benefits of economic progress are reinvested in the community and ultimately, in the people.Meanwhile, Josef Agius, Chief Officer of the Estate Management Directorate within the Lands Authority, emphasised the strategic importance of the scheme, noting that it holds particular value as it will further strengthen support for and facilitate the operations of Voluntary Organisations and Trade UnionsMr Agius explained that through this initiative, the Government is reducing both the administrative and financial burden on these organisations, allowing their limited resources to be directed where they are most needed – for the benefit of society and the community. He added that this will enable them to continue making a positive and tangible impact on people’s lives.Agius also noted that the scheme was made possible through continuous and carefully planned work, building on the success of previous schemes that enabled it to exceed its financial targets ahead of time. The scheme is open to eligible organisations that have no pending arrears and are recognised by the Authority as tenants or holders of a valid title to Government property.Through this initiative, the Government is further strengthening collaboration with organisations and unions, while ensuring they have the best possible conditions to continue fulfilling their crucial role in building a more just, inclusive and sustainable society.Under the scheme, properties measuring between 0 m² and 150 m² will be subject to a reduced rate of €1.50 per square metre, capped at a maximum annual payment of €200. Properties between 151 m² and 1,500 m² will be subject to a reduced rate of €1.00 per square metre, capped at €750 annually, with a minimum annual payment of €200. Properties measuring 1,501 m² or more will be subject to a reduced rate of €0.50 per square metre, capped at €2,000 annually, with a minimum annual payment of €750.Any property which, in exceptional cases, already benefits from a rent lower than the rates outlined above will retain the more advantageous rate. Furthermore, any new allocations made by the Lands Authority to Voluntary Organisations and Trade Unions from now onwards will be granted at the same rates established under this scheme.Tag someone who would be eligible•
