Memphis in a tailspin after a dog walker stumbles onto the remains of 3 children, right across from a school

A routine walk turned into a harrowing discovery in Tennessee when a dog walker stumbled upon what appeared to be human remains. The discovery has set off a massive investigation in Memphis, as authorities are now working to identify the remains of three young children found near a school and a church. According to Fox News, the Memphis Police Department has been actively searching the area since March 8. Police Chief Cerelyn Davis spoke about the gravity of the situation during a press conference on April 22. “Someone knows of missing children that we have discovered in this area,” Davis said. “This is heartbreaking, it’s disturbing and at this time we have numerous resources to help us to identify these young people and bring closure to this investigation.”  The children are believed to be between 3 and 7 years old. Chief Davis also noted that while the scene is unsettling, there is no current indication of an active threat to the general public. Authorities suspect the remains have been in this heavily vegetated area for a few years. Davis is right, it is strange that we have no information about them right now The investigation kicked off after an anonymous caller reported a possible human skull near a wooded area. Once officers located the skull at the edge of the woods, they launched a much larger search operation. A few days later, cadaver K9 units alerted investigators to a nearby drainage pipe. On April 1, search teams found an additional skull inside that drainage system. The next day, a coordinated canvass resulted in the recovery of fourteen additional bones. The logistics of this search are quite extensive. The operation involves approximately 170 personnel, bringing together the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, federal partners, and the Memphis Fire Department. They are conducting a systematic and methodical search of a defined area between Ridgeway Road and Winchester Road. The goal is to locate any additional evidence that might help piece together what happened.  Memphis police confirmed skeletal remains of three children — estimated ages 3 to 7 — were recovered from a wooded section of the city's southeast side. The bones may have gone unnoticed for years. https://t.co/R9MUbmXQ6t— james jackson (@jackgoesvirtual) April 23, 2026 Local parents are feeling the weight of this news. Laquita Singleterry, a local parent, told FOX 13 Memphis that the discovery is “really heartbreaking.” She added, “And I really hope they find out who they belong to.” Another parent, Tonya Richmond, expressed her frustration regarding the location of the discovery. “I feel sorry for those children,” Richmond said. “It’s really sad that it happened in the community right across from a school… someone would dump children.” Cases involving missing children are always complex. According to the Child Crime Prevention & Safety Center, there are many different categories of missing children, ranging from runaways to family or non-family abductions. In the US, every 40 seconds, a child goes missing or is abducted, and approximately 840,000 children are reported missing each year. Many cases are resolved quickly, but others, unfortunately, lead to long-term investigations or tragedy. In contrast, non-family abductions involve acquaintances or strangers and are often associated with other criminal activities.  When children go missing, factors such as physical or mental disabilities can also complicate search efforts, as these children may have trouble communicating their identity or needs. The use of tools like the AMBER Alert system, which was created to honor Amber Hagerman, has proven to be a highly effective way to help rescue children and keep the public informed. The identification process is ongoing, and investigators are working to determine the identities of the three children and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.  As the search continues in the woods between Ridgeway Road and Winchester Road, the city waits for answers that will hopefully provide some form of closure to this investigation.
