Malta has introduced “Malta in Motion”, a national strategy designed to overhaul the island’s transport system over the next 15 years, with an emphasis on integration, efficiency, and sustainability. The plan was presented by Transport Minister Chris Bonett and is anchored by the La Valette Line, which serves as its main component. This rapid transit corridor is intended to connect the north and south of Malta, linking major hubs such as Valletta, Mater Dei Hospital, the University of Malta, Qormi and Malta International Airport. It is described as the “spine” of the future mobility network.Bonett said the initiative represents the largest transport and infrastructure project ever undertaken in Malta, highlighting its national importance. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)The La Valette Line will be complemented by feeder bus services, park-and-ride facilities, improved pedestrian infrastructure, and cycling routes. A national parking strategy and additional measures are expected within the next two to three years, while full completion of the system is projected within 10 to 15 years. The minister also noted that the previously proposed Malta Metro, led by Ian Borg, was a strong concept but ultimately became financially unviable due to rising global construction costs. The updated plan is intended to offer a more realistic and cost-effective alternative.Bonett described the project as “serious and honest”, acknowledging the challenges ahead and stressing that unrealistic timelines will not be set. He also confirmed that discussions have taken place with the Opposition, given that the project will span multiple administrations, and emphasised a non-partisan approach. What’s your view on it?Credit: @maltainmotion via Instagram •
