An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred early morning on Friday, April 24th, 2026, at 6:18 am local time near Irakleion, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 17. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.0, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 6.3, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 5.5, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 5.5.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) located 28 km from the epicenter. In Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) located 46 km from the epicenter, Nea Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900) 92 km away, Irakleion (pop. 137,200) 92 km away, and Gazi (pop. 12,600) 98 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.Weak shaking might have been felt in Rethymno (pop. 32,500) located 147 km from the epicenter.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
