Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced another family-focused proposal as part of Partit Laburista’s electoral manifesto, this time centred on financial support for new parents.Under the proposal, Malta’s current birth bonus would be increased to €5,000 for every child, replacing the existing tiered system. At present, parents receive €1,000 for a first child, €1,500 for a second child, and €2,000 for a third child or more.If introduced, the new scheme would see an initial payment of €3,000 made during the seventh month of pregnancy, with the remaining balance paid after the baby is born. The measure is aimed at helping families manage costs while preparing for the arrival of a child, as well as offering stronger support in the early stages of parenthood. It forms part of Labour’s wider manifesto proposals ahead of Malta’s upcoming general election.•
