Derby/Oaks Roundup: Casse Trio Works; Renegade Ships To Churchill On Friday

Wait 5 sec.

A busy Thursday for GI Kentucky Derby and GI Kentucky Oaks hopefuls was lead by a trio of Mark Casse trainees, and the presumed 'Run for the Roses' favorite Renegade (Into Mischief) put in his final drill in Florida before shipping to Louisville.John Oxley's Silent Tactic (Tacitus), with jockey Cristian Torres aboard, worked a half-mile in :48 on a picture-perfect Thursday morning for Casse at Churchill Downs. On the tab as a single at 7:15 a.m. ET, Silent Tactic clicked off fractions of :12, :24, :48 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01 and six furlongs in 1:14.80, according to clocker Adam Wallace. Two hours prior to the Silent Tactic work, Casse sent out his two GI Longines Kentucky Oaks candidates in West Point Thoroughbreds's Counting Stars (Honor A.P.) and Tracy Farmer's Search Party (Gun Runner).Search Party, with Torres aboard, was first up going a half-mile in :47.60. Following a few minutes behind her was Counting Stars with Froylan Garcia in the saddle for a half-mile in :48.60.Working at Palm Beach Downs in Florida, Robert and Lawana Low and Repole Stable's GI Arkansas Derby winner Renegade went a half-mile in :50.94 over a fast track for trainer Todd Pletcher.Renegade will van to Louisville from South Florida on Friday with an early Saturday morning arrival at Churchill Downs, while his Hall of Fame trainer will come into town that afternoon. Also at Palm Beach Downs, Pletcher worked his two Oaks hopefuls–Repole Stable's Zany (American Pharoah) and Calumet Farm's She Be Smooth (Lexitonian)–together through a half-mile in :49.07.Trainer Michael McCarthy said that Amerman Racing's Stark Contrast (Caravaggio) is out of the Derby picture and will be entered in the $1 million GI American Turf Stakes. With that defection, 'TDN Risng Star, presented by Hagyard,' Intrepido (Maximus Mischief) moves into the top 20 on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. Also working at Churchill Downs was the Bob Baffert-trained Litmus Test (Nyquist) who worked five furlongs in :59 out of the gate under Martin Garcia. With Stark Contrast opting for the American Turf, Litmus Test stands at No. 21 on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard and needs one defection from horses under consideration for the Derby to make the main body of the field when entries are taken Saturday. At Keeneland, Hat Creek Racing's Percy's Bar (Upstart) worked a half-mile in company in :49.60 with Luan Machado aboard for trainer Ben Colebrook.“She will walk on Friday, train first thing Saturday morning at Keeneland and head to Churchill,” Colebrook said. “She won't do much at Churchill. Probably just gallop, go to the gate to stand, go to the paddock to school and that will be it.”Scheduled to work Friday at Churchill Downs for the Derby are 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard', Emerging Market (Candy Ride {Arg}), So Happy (Runhappy) and Wonder Dean (Jpn) (Dee Majesty {Jpn}), with 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard', Golden Tempo (Curlin) expected to stretch his legs at Keeneland. On the Oaks front at Churchill Downs on Friday, 'TDN Rising Stars, presented by Hagyard,' Always a Runner (Gun Runner), Bella Ballerina (Street Sense) and Prom Queen (Quality Road) will be joined by Brooklyn Blonde (Gun Runner), Meaning (Gun Runner) and Paradise (Gun Runner).
